This is a quote from one of my favourite actors and films: Scent of a Woman (1992)

where you don't know what the day will bring. Every day is different and still something is always the same, and you need to master the navigation. (I don't know if there's a fitting movie for that.)

The Wild Bunch Mar 1

Judging by the sentiment of the recent polls, I'd say it would be the Wild Bunch.

Synopsis: a bunch of aging outlaws (translators) failing (refusing) to move on with the times as the Old West (translation industry) disappear around them...

Dutch: Silver rings your butt, them's washers!

Movies Mar 1

I think Al Pacino is an extremely talented actor, one of my favorites as well. One of his older movies, Scarface, is also a good example of his talent though the movie depicts Miami's crime scene with cocaine and associated bloody violence. The movie has an unfortunate ending but then again, for someone who is into illicit drugs, that is quite normal.

Another Al Pacino movie that I like is Heat (1995). The movie features a bank heist with Robert De Niro as a master thief and Al Pacino as a smart LA cop. The bank robbery is intricately planned, and seems to move smoothly at first. This one also has a sad ending as expected. The movie stars other Hollywood talents like Val Kilmer and Ashley Judd.

All the movies above are rated R (Restricted) according to Motion Picture Association of America. I like MPAA rating system because it gives me a good idea about the movie. Most movies I like are rated R.

Coming to your question in the heading, it is really hard to come up with a movie that captures translators' experiences. There are a lot of movies (US or other countries) that feature translators or the word translator in the title of the movie, as you can check at the website IMDB. I have not watched those so I cannot comment on them.

Fluency and flowing Mar 1

It isn't a quote from a movie, but from an actor. It doesn't capture just my experiences as a professional translator; it's more like a life philosophy.

The quote is from Bruce Lee's last interview with a Canadian channel in December 1971. (This is a 20-min video.) > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLXYFEa0q58

The quote is from Bruce Lee's last interview with a Canadian channel in December 1971. (This is a 20-min video.) > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLXYFEa0q58
This interview starts with a sort of connection to our profession, since Bruce's talking about films dubbing due to the two Chinese language varieties, Cantonese (his language) and Mandarin.
Then he talks about the link he sees between martial arts, body movements, acting, and human expression honestly.
Around 7:30 or so, he talks about movements in Chinese boxing, keeping continuity going, bending and stretching to keep moving
“the idea is that flowing water never goes stale, so just keep on flowing.”

But the famous quote appears at 12:20:
“Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

This is the quote's short clip > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJMwBwFj5nQ

Then he talks about stereotypes and exoticism in films, about discrimination of foreigners and racism in business, about how he's criticized for living in both worlds, and close to the final he says:
“Once the opening of China happens, that it will bring more understanding! More things that are like different. And maybe in the contrast of comparison some new thing might grow.”
Which isn't a famous quote, but I feel it related to our profession too.

I think there are many, but one that came to my mind is Gone with the Wind.
Scarlett's famous quote: “After all, tomorrow is another day,” perfectly captures that. She never knows what the next day will bring, and she pushes forward no matter what.

The learning machine Mar 1

There's been a lot of talk about AI and machine versus human...
This is a language-related comedy and it is a must-see.
The scene in the link below shows us a group of 'gifted' students who are put to the test with a learning machine.

Les sous-doués (The Under-Gifted), 1980:
