As a video game localizer myself, I know all the shoddy quality that gets rubber-stamped. And even if the localization quality itself is good, I simply cannot stand German voice acting; my wife is currently playing Horizon Forbidden West and Aloy's German VA just sounds annoying, especially compared with the greatness that is Ashly Burch's English voice acting.

My last run-in with poor localization was the VERY FIRST loading screen of Baldur's Gate 3, which more or less SCREAMED "Machinese". This is a AAA title that has won GotY, mind you.

No sounds at all. Only the interface. I currently only do Real Racing 3 on my phone and used to play another racing game on a laptop. Gaming is not a big part of my life. I did translate one game though, and the customer liked my translation and hired me for two other games forming a series. Put a lot of hard work into all three. I wonder if there are people who believe game translation and subtitling are easy and fun to do. Fun—maybe, but how can such things be easy unless you're happy with the "all your base are belong to us" level of translation. Some people still remember old machine translations from Microsoft where a mouse driver was translated with an old-fashioned word meaning a cattle driver, only tasked with driving (presumably) one single mouse. Sorry for going off-topic. I know, a lazy translator won't create a text that would read as if it was originally written in the target language (most translators know this principle but very few actually follow it—because it's really difficult to follow)Collapse

Let's at least make the effort to write questions properly.

No, I prefer in original English.

There is only one exception: The Witcher 3. This I play in Polish

But... isn't Polish the original language of the Witcher franchise? Or do CDPR go the usual industry way of writing and recording everything in English first? I honestly don't know

EDIT: Actually I do SORT OF know since I was on the LQA team for Witcher 2, where our FIGS team was working off the English version while Polish was long done.

Critical Role of Localization in Enhancing the Gaming Experience Jan 10

I’m not a fan of video games myself, but I had the opportunity to work as a localization manager for a US-based company in the gaming industry, and I’m currently collaborating with other companies to translate video games. Proper localization can make or break a game’s success by bridging cultural gaps and ensuring players feel fully immersed. It’s fascinating to see how this process transforms the gaming experience!Collapse

I consider myself a gamer because I usually play games on my phone and online browser.
However, most of the games I play are sort of casual games that don't have a plot/story to follow, like, for example, color/water sort, match-3, solitaire, or mahjong.

Then, when I play those games that have a story, I'm very much used to omit the animation/video part since it's too boring, and I when I play, I just want to play, not wasting time watching videos.

So, only the language of the instructions is important, that I usually read in my native language which is Spanish. But even so, sometimes I have to look vocabulary on the dictionary if the game is in a funny/strange to me, European Spanish.

English is not always original. The Witcher series is an example because it's original language is Polish.

Alex Lichanow wrote:

It is. For Witcher 3, the Polish actors confirmed that they were still first, but the English actors recorded it soon after. Still, the games are originally written in Polish, CD Projekt does the Polish original themselves and outsources the English dub to another company.

According to this video:

at 3:55 - Our office langage is English, BUT the story itself is still done in Polish.

I don't play much video games any more, but I prefer ALL my computer interfaces to be in English (ashamed for it), even though I absolutely want them to be available in my native language, and sometimes I even work on UI translation projects.
