meet-up nicaraguense?
Dec 15, 2014
I will be in Nicaragua (first Leon and the San Juan) from December 21 to January 5 - and I was wondering if any of the lovcal translators would be interested in meeting up (nb! my Spanish is rusty after decades of not using it, but I get by)

A Powwow in Nicaragua would be like having one in El Salvador or Honduras. The translation profession in these three countries is almost nil.

I know
Dec 16, 2014
that it is a long shot, Wilsonn, but there are a little over 100 translators' profiles based in Nicaragua according to proz.com records, so I may be lucky - who knows.

have you read other thread on problems with term "powwow"?
Dec 16, 2014
It's ironic that, at the moment (Dec. 16), this thread is appearing right next to one called "Discontinue the use of the term 'powwow'." I wonder if you've read it: there's a lot of very thought-provoking comments there. I wonder if you've read it: there's a lot of very thought-provoking comments there. Indeed, among educated people, "powwow" is considered a totally inappropriate term for a gathering, suggesting that the person using it is insensitive to how upsetting it is for Native Americans to hear the term misused. I know you don't mean it to be offensive, but it's worth listening to why Native Americans get offended if they hear other people using it casually. For other educated people, "powwow" is a term that professionals would avoid at all costs if they want to be taken seriously.
I wonder if you could find a better term. Many alternatives are discussed in the other thread.
Hope this is taken in the constructive spirit in which it is offered.

I have no problems changing a term that is culturally insensitive for some
Dec 16, 2014
however, even if I do, this post is still listed in the category "powwows."
I know there is much discussion about the appropriation of terms from one culture in another, but the first nation's torontonians I've met locally have not mobilized against this specific term.

category change?
Dec 16, 2014
You're right, there's still the issue of the category of "Powwows." Maybe those in charge at Proz can be convinced to change the name.
Besides being a term that offends some First Nation groups in some places, it's also a term that many (including me) consider to be unprofessional, outdated, and suggestive more of used-car salesmen rather than linguists. If we want to be taken seriously, we really can't keep on using such a pathetic term.

Did you see the suggestion in the other thread for "symprozium"? I like it, but there are other suggestions as well. ▲ Collapse

Actually

I must say that the idea you find the term "suggestive of used-car salesmen" to me is even more offensive than the fact that it is being used as a term for a cultural/linguistic meeting of translators. Not easy keeping the connotations/denotations of the term from adding to the injury, is it. Personally I think Symprozium is a pretty bad term (and very euro-centric)

Hello Hege, It would have been nice for me to be able to participate in a translators powwow in San Juan del Sur. Unfortunately I have already made plans for the 28th. I just got the notification even though I see some of your posts are dated Dec 16 I wonder what happened. However, I am in León and it would be nice to meet you if you have time for it. give me a call or e-mail me if you would like to meet. please send the invitation with a few more days in advance next time.

I'm sorry I didn't see this in time, but I had since moved on from Leon to Granada and then San Juan del Sur and got caught up in Christmas celebrations. Still enjoying Nicaragua very much, but my time is limited and there is still much to see.
