AFAIK it's pronounced 'hash' in American English.

In Swedish it any of these:

fyrkant [fürkahnt] (square)

brädgård [braidgohrd] ('timberyard', am. 'lumberyard') which what it is used for on Swedish maps

Pound sign Feb 10, 2010

# in American English is called "the pound sign". Sometimes, in telephone menus you can hear "pound key", as in " press the pound key now".

I'm under the impression that Americans call it a pound. In ZA, if you ask someone to press the "pound" sign they'll probably try to find the GBP currency glyph.

Afrikaans: hekkie (literally gate), huts
ZA English: hash

It's hash in UK English Feb 10, 2010

I always thought it was in US English as well (it's not actually used much in the UK anyway, so I assumed we got it from them) - so what do Americans call the actual pound sign £ then?

Ladder Feb 10, 2010

Here in Palestine, the Arabic designation is sillam (ladder).

BTW, in America, I know it as the number key, but it's the pound sign (for weight).
