Wonderful and generous act Oct 5, 2010

Could we purchase online access to this database? That would be great for every medical translator.

75,000 medical terms ? Oct 5, 2010

what and how many languages?
it seems to me a wooly article

if 75,000 medical terms are to be spread on 5 languages, for example, the result would be very poor, but even a couple of languages would make it a poor thing, considering that my Stedman's Electronic Medical Dictionary, v7.0, for example, contains "over 107,000 medical terms, including more in-depth coverage of embryology, endocrinology, geriatrics, internal medicine, pediatrics, and many other medical specialties. This new version delivers over 1,800 images, most in full color, to aid in comprehension and understanding. In addition, we’ve added audio pronunciations for combining forms and eponymous terms, for a total of nearly 60,000 terms so you can hear exactly how to say key terminology. You will also find 42 full-color anatomical videos provided by the renowned Acland's DVD Atlas of Human Anatomy to facilitate hard to understand anatomical concepts, plus web links to the National Library of Medicine’s Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) database, as well as ICD-9-CM codes for relevant terms."

and an average medical dictionary EN>IT of mine contains about the same amount of terms ...

Misunderstanding - no other languages involved Oct 5, 2010

Upon reading the article, my understanding is that there are no foreign languages involved in this database. It is a monolingual English database, and "translation" means assigning billing codes to standard names of illnesses, conditions, where "standard" can be multiple different naming conventions. The database also contains "plain" or "laymen" terms for those diseases, so it is essentially a synonym dictionary.

Example from the article:
CMT contains more than 75,000 medical terms and billing codes commonly used by physicians as well as simpler synonyms that can be understood by patients.

For example, the World Health Organization's standardized terminology dictionary refers to coronary artery disease (CAD) as atherosclerotic heart disease of native coronary arteries without angina pectoris. The CMT would translate that term for physicians as CAD and for patients looking at their personal electronic health record as "heart disease," said Phil Fasano, CIO of Kaiser Permanente.

well, now why they called it "translation engine"?
ah yes, billing codes ...

but considering that a standard medical terminology corpus aready exixsts, ICD-9 and ICD-10, what can be the usefulness of this tool, if any?

For medical students? Oct 6, 2010

I met many medical students who attempted to remember (Latin/Greek rooted) medical terms and their definitions which are not easy to remember. This translation engine will facilitate their learning processes, not translators' who never intend to study and master medicine at all!

The word "translation" Oct 6, 2010

Yes, if you ask Google to send you notices about press reports containing the word "translation", you'll discover that the word is used for much more than "language translation". In this case, the word "translate" means "look up". It is a perfectly valid use of the word, but it has little to do with our profession.
