What I always do with these cells is hide them before I open the XLS file in TagEditor and unhide them after translation. Works a treat. To make the selection of cells for hiding easier, you can try sorting the data so all cells you want to hide are in close proximity to one another.
I wouldn't know of a way to make parts of a cell untranslatable, though.

Excellent suggestion! I have not thought about it, as usually I have the Trados filter setting to include hidden text (as often customers want it). But of works if it is turned off then it works perfectly!
As for parts of cells, this is not as important...

Unfortunately, Tortoise Tagger works only in Word, as styles in Excel works somewhat differently...
