เมื่อถูกขอร้องให้ทดสอบแปลแบบฟรีๆ ลูกค้าน้อยรายที่แจ้งกลับมาว่า ผลการแปลเป็นอย่างไร (ส่วนใหญ่คำตอบคือ "ใช้ไม่ได้") ผมพบบ่อยๆ จนไม่แปลกใจ และถือหลักว่า ทดสอบแปลให้เมื่ออยากแปลแค่นั้นเอง ไม่ได้คาดหวังอะไร ในบางครั้งก็ใช้ MT ส่งไปเพื่อดัดนิสัยลูกค้าที่ไม่เป็นความสำคัญของนักแปล
ผมมีตัวอย่างการแปลเพื่อทำงานในปริมาณมากแห่งหนึ่งเมื่อสองสามวันก่อนที่ได้รับรายงานผล จึงเอามาแสดงเพื่อประโยชน์ของพวกเรา
ผมยังเพิ่มความเห็นของผมในฐานะผู้แปลไว้ท้ายเครื่องหมาย "........" ว่า ทำไมจึงแปลทดสอบไปแบบนั้นครับ
เป็นเอกสารโฆษณาโรงแรมผ่านทางเว็บไซต์ครับ

Sample test feedback:

Some poorly constructed sentences, some inaccurate translations, all in all they are not fatal but could be a demonstration of the translator's lack of complete conprehension of the source language. ...เค้าเขียนตอบด้วยภาษาอังกฤษผิดๆ
ต้นฉบับเป็นภาษาญี่ปุ่น ผมแปลเป็นไทย แต่ฟีดแบคกลับเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ

Omission: 'hotel' in hotel room .... ผมไม่ต้องเขียนคำนี้ซ้ำๆ เมื่อแปลเอกสารทางการตลาด

English terms that can be translated e.g. 'upload photos', 'choose file', etc must be translated. ... ผมถือว่าคำทับศัพท์จะเข้าใจได้ดีกว่า

Moreover, not translating the same term in one place and translating it in another is unacceptable (in Category Hotel, translated as ประเภทโรงแรม, then Category Room, untranslated). .... ผมไม่แปลแบบ verbatim

Inconsistency of an identical term: 'ภาพหลักเริ่มต้น' and 'ค่าเริ่มต้นหลักของภาพ' ....ผมถือว่าเนื้อความอยู่ในคนละสำนวนกัน

Poorly structured sentence: 'หากภาพที่จะนำมาใช้เป็นคำอธิบายภาพของโรงแรม' and 'หากภาพที่จะนำมาใช้เป็นคำอธิบายภาพของห้องพัก'...ผมรักษาเนื้อความตามต้นฉบับอย่างเคร่งครัด เพราะเกี่ยวกับการแสดงรายละเอียดของสินค้า (ห้องพักของโรงแรม)

The translation 'คำอธิบายภาพของ (photo description of)' is not a very accurate translation and could cause some confusion.... คำแปลทางการตลาดมีโอกาสทำให้สับสนกันอยู่แล้ว ไม่ว่าในภาษาไหนๆ เพราะไม่ใช่การแปลภาษาด้านกฎหมาย

ผมเอามาให้อ่านเพื่อ translation criticism อีกด้วย
เวลาพวกเราไปรับงานแปล โดยจะต้องทดสอบแปลเสียก่อน จะต้องทำใจว่า นักแปลที่ประสบการณ์สูงอาจถูกประเมินโดยลูกค้าที่ขาดประสบการณ์ก็ได้ จึงต้องทำใจครับ
