I have never seen so many questions in one week about a software-release as with regard to the Trados2009 Studio. Many jumped on it, but it seemed had more flaws than an MsOffice release. Except for the Autotrans feature, which is not new-other packages like Babylon use this too, what is the difference between 2007 and 2009.
It isn't it better to wait a year until all the glitches have been patched?

It is good but compatibility issues Jun 14, 2009

I find it is worth it but:
_TMs from Trados and SDLX 2007 and below are to be converted everytime you use Studio
_Termbases from MultiTerm 2007 and below have to be exported before the upgrade because they are then unusable and MultiTerm 2007, unlike SDL Trados 2007, has to be fully uninstalled before the upgrade
_Trados 2007 and below still work and Workbench/TagEditor is compatible with MultiTerm 2009 but SDLX is not yet (the website says that a patch is to come soon but donn

I guess most agencies have not upgraded yet, so there is no rush. I personnally think that the interface is user friendly and even as a freelancer you can batch docs in the same projects, it is not difficult to understand and if you are offered a revision task, you can validate or reject translated segments and insert comments but not track changes like on MS Word. It is also "spell-check as you type", unlike the 2007 version, and can translate PDF docs directly as you probably know, and I have tried it: they keep all the formats, images, background colours etc. The minus point is that I can't find a grammar checker like on SDLX 2007.

Depending on your clients/agencies' requirements, I guess you can afford to wait a bit longer
If I have said anything wrong, please correct me

Agencies and Trados Studio 2009 Jun 14, 2009

Any reason for agencies to upgrade? What is new in Trados Studio 2009 for agencies?

Project management? There is already Synergy for project management.
AutoSuggest? It maybe useful for translators only, not for PMs.
PDF filter? DTP staff will hate it. (Consider a 20-languages project)

My conclusion: Great agencies will not buy it.

Well, I mainly use other CAT tools anyway for 70% of my work. For the 30% remaining, Freelance 2007 will do the job quite well for the next couple of years.

Smart agencies in any case.

There are much better options available now with better support, better levarage of resources and greater ease of use. The agency experiences I have heard from those who made the switch to MemoQ are rather impressive on the whole. MemoQ is now, for the most part, what Trados Studio 2009 wants to be but fails to achieve. I do prefer DVX for a number of tasks still, but right now the really active development work and best support seems to be in the Kilgray camp. I find it incredibly amusing that MemoQ is actually more "Trados-compatible" than many Trados versions are, and I can use even the free version to generate bilingual Word files that could be translated with the Trados Workbench macros in MS Word from any source file format that MemoQ accepts - and the dates and numbers are included!!.

Why stick with a loser?

Indeed MemoQ is the best CAT tool around, right now, along with Across, the new version of which (version 5) is very, very promising (not that v4.0 is bad —I find it excellent so far).

I'll buy it before the end of the month Jun 14, 2009

I don't know about agencies, but I've never received any Synergy project and I doubt I'll ever receive a Studio project; that's not why I'm upgrading. About the pdf filter, it seems more than a gimmick than anything else. Unless the pdf is very, very simple, it will require some editing, and it's always better to do the editing before rather than after the translation.

Unless the pdf is very, very simple, it will require some editing, and it's always better to do the editing before rather than after the translation.

I'm also worried about the reports of all the crashes and bugs. I'm using a non-released version and it's pretty stable, albeit with plenty of bugs. But I don't want to buy a software that has more issues than the previous version.

Despite all the complaints about the company, Studio is a vastly better product than Trados. I find the features better designed and easy to customize, although for people not familiar with Trados or SDLX, the learning curve might be steeper. The interaction between the concordance tool, the termbases, the autosuggestions and the auto-text in one single, easy-to-use display is fantastic and has saved me a lot of time (although I can't see the text and attributes from Editor). The real-time QA that finds missing tags, periods, terms is also a time-saver.

Since SDL has decided to make the Autosuggestion feature free until the end of June, I'll buy this month.

Trados studio 2009 Jun 14, 2009

many agencies/colleagues still use MS Windows releases lower than XP and Trados releases lower than SDL Trados 2007, so I'll wait on the bank of the river another 2 years I think
;-D

It's a great experience when you just break away from Trados and all of the crap they dump on people.

Just get rid of that awful program.

That is a very good way of summarising it.

I don't understand the rush to upgrade Jun 15, 2009

My policy is, "if I don't have to, I don't upgrade".

For example, I'm still working with Windows XP and Office 2003, and I'm very happy with it. I don't see any need to upgrade to Windows Vista and Office 2007.

I upgraded recently from Trados 6.5 to 2007 Freelance Suite, and this is just because I heard they are going to release the Studio soon. After this upgrade, I don't see any reason for me to upgrade in the next 2-3 years...

Hi Williamson,

There's a brief and reasonably objective assessment of the Studio 2009 launch in this week's ToolKit (http://www.internationalwriters.com/toolkit/).

The article is entitled "Some Dorky Licensing", which sums up what for most Trados customers was the biggest problem with the launch: the one-year term-limited licence for Studio 2007 originally included in the Studio 2009 package (the bundled 2007 licence is now permanent).

If you are thinking of moving on to Studio 2009 Freelance at some time in the near future, it will probably be worth your while to buy the product before the end of this month as you will also get an activation code for AutoSuggest. According to the Toolkit article, AutoSuggest is "arguably ... the most interesting new feature in the new version of Trados" and AFAIR it will cost an extra 200 euros with the Freelance edition from July.

My apologies to the Trados-bashers for not mentioning any of the many other excellent CAT tools that are available

Giles

I have heard several comments that state Studio as a better solution on these points, because of the batch task sequences ( manual / automated / customizable) and the widest range of file filters currently available & easly customizable ...

I would love to assess if these are actual data or rather just rumor...

And BTW, a good question could be:
Is there still something we can do only by having Trados (or its time has finally come ?)

Eager for knowledge

Autosuggestion is an integral part of MemoQ. I think you're subject to a bit of autosuggestion yourself if you're going to let that stampede you into upgrading. A typical SDL strategy.

The difference is that in MemoQ you do not have to prepare the entries beforehand from a large database of past translations, but it gives suggestions from real-time updated TM. In other words, you can get suggestions from the project you are currently working on, where they are most likely to be found...
