Up to now I have always worked from a source document on paper, but a regular supplier of patents for abstracting has now gone entirely electronic, and I shall have to work from the original on screen.
I have seen references in these forums previously to people who work with two screens from one computer, one displaying the original, the other for working on the translation.
Any advice on how to set up such a system and how best to use it would be appreciated.

Personally, I use and can recommend Maxivista ( http://www.maxivista.com ) - a programme that requires minimal setup and has an easy learning curve. It is not overly expensive and imho, the investment is well worth the rewards.

You don't say what your current system/setup is and I'll leave more 'techy' things to others better able to provide details, but your video card must be able to support dual screens.

There is also a type of cable (the name of which escapes me of course right t this moment) which I used before switching to Maxivista. It essentially allows you to control 2 setups (monitor, keyboard, mouse) from your main PC/Keyboard/mouse.

I hope others will come forward with more detailed explanations for you.

Laptop + additional screen Sep 29, 2007

Hi Jack,

I work with two screens, but I think you need to work on a laptop to be able to set up this system. Actually, you simply need to plug the dongle of your screen in your laptop, then change the graphical properties of your laptop to set the dual screen (in French, it's called "Bureau étendu", I don't know the English expression).
If you work with a PC, then I cannot help you, I'm sorry

Graphics card, two monitors... and you're set Sep 29, 2007

Please note that Maxivista is needed only if you want to have one desktop on two computers.

The chance is that you already have such a card in your system, if it is relatively modern and not made only for office work. Just look at the back of your computer and where the monitor cable is connected - if you see a similar, unused connection, then this is it (mind you the same or similar looking connection, i.e. SVGA or DVI. A small black one won't cut it - it is TV output).

Also, if you have a laptop, there is often a graphics output installed, so you can work with two monitors as well.

What needs to be done next depends to some extent on the make of the graphics card. However, when you connect the second monitor, it should be detected and configured automatically. If you have more questions at this point, feel free to ask...

Yet another option is a hardware splitter (e.g. Matrox DualHead), which saves you configuration hassles and is quite reliable, but in my opinion it price is not really justified.

When you look for an additional monitor, I suggest considering one with a pivot stand. It enables you to put the monitor in portrait, which is quite handy for reading PDF originals and for proofreading.

Dual screen video card Sep 29, 2007

Hello Jack

I had thought about setting up two screens for a while, as I had been using two computers, transferring PDF files to my spare one to look at and doing the translation on my main one, for example. It was a bit of a nuisance as I had to burn the files to a CD-ROM to transfer them.

Hello Jack

I had thought about setting up two screens for a while, as I had been using two computers, transferring PDF files to my spare one to look at and doing the translation on my main one, for example. It was a bit of a nuisance as I had to burn the files to a CD-ROM to transfer them.

My opportunity to purchase a dual screen video card came recently when I replaced my computer. Although there is a lack of computer expertise in this town, I came across a tech who uses a dual screen for video games and so he knew all about it.
He installed an ASUS-EN7900GS card and it is working very well. When I turn my computer on, the other screen has the same display and I can just drag the extra program I want to use (in my case it is usually Trados) onto the other screen. This means I have the whole main screen for my main document.

The card cost A$ 215 (£ 93) and I am finding it very handy. You can have your e-mail program open on the spare screen, for example.

Hope this helps a bit.

Sincerely

Robin

single widescreen 22" instead of two standard 17" or 19"? Sep 29, 2007

I consider buying a widescreen 22" monitor. Its display has much enough room for two A4 sheets side by side, and a free area of approx 3 cm width x display height still remaining free for icons etc. Just perfect for keeping two applications open and visible full-size at the same time, e.g. text editor and Internet browser.

That would be a simpler solution than two standard-aspect monitors, and the price is also much lower than for two 17s.

Still, I'm not not sure whether my video card will do (desktop computer, NVidia 4400 (can't recall the model exactly, writing from another computer) - would the image be stretched horizontally, or hopefully not? Would I need an up-to-date video card to support widescreen?

BTW I don't play games, just typical office applications, not going to switch to Vista, so don't need a high-end hardware.

Anybody experienced with the issue? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Extra screen, one computer Sep 29, 2007

I agree with the last two that proposed getting a new card and just double your screen space. You'd be surprised how much easier it becomes when you don't have to switch back and forth between windows. Then you can just put them side by side and view both simultaneously and work from one set of controls.

Maybe something like this:

Two monitors Sep 29, 2007

Two monitors is definitely the way to go. You get a lot more desktop real estate than any widescreen monitor can provide (except the Apple 30" Cinema HD display), and it's very efficient when working with translation. It allows you to have your favorite CAT tool on one monitor for instance, and use the other for things like dictionary lookups, web browsing, instant messaging/skype etc.

Installation is fairly painless: You connect the second monitor to the second output of your video card (assuming you have two outputs - if not, you can buy a new card that does fairly cheap, as most new cards have two), go into the display options for Windows, and then check "Extend my windows desktop onto this monitor". If the display positions are reversed, you can either switch which cable connects to which output, or go into the display options for your video card and do it (may not be as intuitive as simply swapping cables).

You get the best results when getting a second monitor that matches the size of your current one, but if you have trouble doing that, a 19" and 17" would work as well.

According to this discussion:

http://www.driverheaven.net/nvidia-graphic-cards/123957-geforce4-ti-4400-1440x900.html

you should be fine. As far as I remember, most gcards will support any resolution the monitor throws at them, provided it does not exceed the max resolution.

Works brilliantly Sep 29, 2007

Hi Jack,

I've been using two screens for most of this year now. Don't ask me about the technicalities, but I didn't have to buy anything new other than the screen itself. I find it particularly useful for pdf files, so I can have the original document open on the secondary screen, whilst the document I'm overwriting and my TM program are running on the other screen. I can't imagine not having it now! And it must save on paper costs, as I always used to print the original documents/reference materials out before, but now I don't bother. I've noticed that my sons use it to have msn/facebook or whatever open whilst they're doing something (probably computer games, though it should be homework!) on the other screen.

Definitely the way to go.

Hi, there is a Programm, at least with Acer, called GridVista. You can select different possibilities, from 1 to 4 parts in every screen.
It is quite practice.

Good luck!!

I tried to paste a print-copy (Spanish pantallazo) and does not work in Proz forum.
Would be a good idea because an image ist more worth than 1000 words (or what is that in English)

Thank you all for your suggestions and advice. I'll consult with a local computer geek on Monday and get something done about it.

As for your other question, I started using www.photobucket.com for putting images online, as a peer recommended in a previous forum.

It give you four options as listed below, each of which I shall copy in here as a demo and see what happens, because one did not work recently for me:

Right - clearly IMG code for screenshots then.

Correction! Having posted, obviously both HTML tag and IMG code work, although it did not look like that on the preview of this post.

Enjoy your "stereophonic vista" and best wishes.

In fact I am begining to wish I had gone for 3 or even 4 screens. But having 2 screens is already a huge productivity boost that willl in due course pay for itself. Like Cinemascope. Go for the biggest!
