Hi,

I am a student of Translation Studies.
One of my modules this semester is Translation Theory. We have to write an essay on any topic related to Translation Theory (5000 words).

I have a personal interest in sports and would like to combine the topic of translation with the topic of sport.

Does anybody have any ideas for a research question?

I would be very grateful for some help.

Ideas from a recent discussion Feb 16, 2008

Juana,

The ProZ.com community recently had a fabulous and extensive discussion on the role of translation theory in the life and profession of a translator (http://www.proz.com/topic/94828). I am sure among the many comments posted in this thread you will find some aspect that catches your attention and that you will be able to make into a full paper. Translation and interpreting in football: article in journal Feb 16, 2008

There was an article in the latest edition of "The Linguist" (journal of The Chartered Institute of Linguists, UK) by Dan Brennan (a ProZ member) on the subject of translating and interpreting as it affects footballers, and in particular football managers. Dan runs an agency which specializes in this subject. If this is a subject that interests you, you could send him a message via his ProZ prof... See more

If this is a subject that interests you, you could send him a message via his ProZ profile page - http://www.proz.com/profile/37246 - he might be willing to help.

P.S. I could send you a copy of the article if you contact me via my profile.

Ideas (to avoid, perhaps...) from a recent discussion Feb 16, 2008

Among the comments posted in that thread you might, with luck, find some aspect that catches your attention and that you will be able to make into a full paper.

* By which I mean the proponents of theory suddenly opted out of the discussion - which thus came to nothing of any value.

While you could argue that this was not necessarily theory in its full context, its presentation (in the form of quotations) approximates that of many theory classes, and it has the advantage of referring to frequently-read authors on the subject of translation. Hope it helps, even if just a bit.

According to the website it has "1.2 million bibliographic records of journal articles and other education-related materials." Under "translation theory" I have seen lots of useful resources. I hope you find something interesting in your research area.
