This may be far-reaching, but I'm looking for any Tz'utujil (also spelled Sutujil) speakers or translators into English or Spanish. Tz'utujil is the language of one of the 21 Mayan ethnic groups in Guatemala, spoken by about 50,000 people.
Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi,
I know there are some linguists out there who specialize in extremely rare / dying languages. Hopefully, there are some around ProZ.
If not, I suggest you to search around linguistic Institutes ( offline or online).

I would go searching for universities with anthropological departments specialized in this area. With a bit of luck, you could find somebody who did some fieldwork with that ethnic group.

Exactly, very good point.
I have a friend who traveled around the world recording dying languages, as a part of a university linguistic project. It must have been a solitary experience, heh.

Either that or go to the source. Guatemalan government organizations, academy of science, universities, translator organizations etc. 10 minutes of googling should give you a dozen email addresses.

Thank you all for your suggestions... I'm working on some anthropology contacts, and the publisher is also a great idea. It's been quite a wild goose chase, but I've received a few responses so far.

I traveled through about a year ago and got hold of a Tzutujil grammar. It appears the persons who wrote the grammar are from San Pedro La Laguna (at Lago de Atitlan). (I ran into the cousin of one of them.) One of them is a professor in a major city, but I forgot which city. I am sure one of them should be able to help.

In any event, practically all Tzutujil speak Spanish and there are many Spanish courses offered by native Tzutujil to foreigners in San Pedro La Laguna, so I am sure one of the teachers there could help, at least with translation into Spanish, possibly backed up with proofreading afterward. (Perhaps google for "Spanish course" (/school/class) and "San Pedro La Laguna" to find the web sites/emails of these schools.)
