How to add your CafeTran Espresso glossary to a Trados Multiterm termbase?

In most cases, you will want to send your CafeTran Espresso glossary with project-related terms as a simple text or Excel file, along with the Trados return package.

In most cases, you will want to send your CafeTran Espresso glossary with project-related terms as a simple text or Excel file, along with the Trados return package.

In rare occasions, your client requires you to update the Trados Multiterm termbase that was embedded in the Trados SDLPPX package that you received.

How to do this?

Although CafeTran Espresso has splendid support for Trados Studio packages (ranging from extraction of termbases and TMs to tracking changes), there's one thing that CafeTran Espresso cannot do: add new entries from your CafeTran Espresso glossary to a Trados Multiterm termbase that is embedded in a Trados Studio return package.

But no worries, you can do this yourself. One caveat: you gonna need Trados Studio.

Not the simplest but the most robust way to import your glossary in a Multiterm termbase leads via Ms Excel. (Why? Because of possible character encoding problems and deviant line feeds. If this doesn't ring a bell, don't mind ...)

So, firstly you'll have to paste your CafeTran Espresso glossary into a new and shiny Ms Excel worksheet. Make sure that you also paste the language codes, but remove the #'s.

Use the Bilingual Excel file type to add the Excel glossary to the existing or a new project, making sure that the termbase to add to is the default one:

Now the final step: It's Delivery Time!

In Windows navigate to the folder structure of the Trados package. You will need the .sdltb file that is located in the Termbases subfolder. You will need to send this file to your client, together with the return package that you have created in CafeTran Espresso.
