I live in the UK but most of my clients are in Spain, so it makes more sense to work by the Spanish calendar. When it's a public holiday in Spain I might take it easy a bit but still tend to work, Christmas Day being the only exception. I also normally keep an eye on the e-mail until at least 7 pm here (8 pm in Spain), which is the end of the working day in Spain.

I even tend to forget they exist... Closed shops usually remind me - when I need to shop for food. Strange delivery dates (Tuesday instead of Monday for instance) of clients abroad, and visits, messages, wishes or posts from friends abroad keep me informed of holidays (whatever their type) in other countries.

You can tell it's a bank holiday today by looking out of your window - it's raining | | | Sonia Hill United Kingdom Local time: 13:44 Italian to English
I have to observe them as I have two small children and our usual childcare isn't available on bank holidays. It's typical UK bank holiday weather here today. In fact, we have just been out for a very wet bank holiday Monday walk with the dog! I make sure I check my emails regularly, even on a bank holiday, because I am aware that it isn't always a bank holiday in my clients' countries.

I now realise I should have said Other, but I originally answered NO, because I claim (perhaps over-ambitiously) to offer a 24-7 service and don't really observe holidays anywhere unless I really want to. I might decide to take a day or weekend off if, for example, my friends who work 9-5 invite me to a barbecue or paella or whatever. The upside is that I could take a holiday right now, if I felt like it. In fact, I might take this afternoon off and go into town to look for some s... I supose some might consider it a bit pathetic, but one client sent me a job on Xmas Eve 2009 and I did that too and delivered it on Xmas morning. ▲ Collapse | | | DianeGM Local time: 15:44 Member (2006) Dutch to English + ...
I don't really organise my schedule to correspond to the holiday cycles of any country. But, I am aware of when there are national holidays are in the UK, Greece (where I live) and Holland/Belgium (countries of languages in which I work. If I don't already know I'm usually informed by emails saying the office is/will be closed on ....., or I notice by the absence of emails from clients, etc. from that country Unless something urgent and well-paid rolls in at the eleventh hour, usual... If I don't already know I'm usually informed by emails saying the office is/will be closed on ....., or I notice by the absence of emails from clients, etc. from that country Unless something urgent and well-paid rolls in at the eleventh hour, usually I do work a half day rather than a full day on the national holidays here in Greece because I have 2 young children and I love to and, so, take every opportunity to spend time with my family. I don't know if that counts as 'observing' per se, I am always available to respond to emails. In any case, I think here in Greece specifically we have many more national holidays than other European countries, it'd be hard to honour them all.

I just don't get the idea of a national holiday. My holidays are mine only, I take them at my own discretion.
