I finally gave in and purchased SDL Trados 2009. Personally, I like the interface even though the software itself has a somewhat sad penchant for crashing.

Dragon naturally speaking is compatible enough with the editor and both the speed and accuracy are acceptable. I have only done the bare minimum of training to adapt DNS to my voice. The most serious hurdle with DNS has been finding the right regional accent for my voice… I first attempted to dictate using Australian English, based on the assumption that the rest of the world cannot distinguish the difference between New Zealand and Australian accents anyway. Apparently Dragon Naturally Speaking can. This resulted in hilarious and unsuccessful attempts to mimic a broad Australian accent in order to make DNS obey me. So I gave up and tried UK English instead. This has proven considerably more successful…

After the first 10,000 words of a nasty document consisting of a seemingly endless number of unnecessarily complicated and “grammatically challenged” sentences, I have to say that DNS appears to be faster than typing.

Yes, the proof-reading now requires more effort. However I regard this as more of a positive side-effect.

I’m a translator and not an interpreter and learning to actually speak my translation out loud rather than simply typing it has proven to be the greatest challenge thus far.

But it’s fun: Uttering my translation in a firm, authoritative voice. A tad hard on the throat after 10 hours, but fun nonetheless. ▲ Collapse

I use the French version of DNS. It was made with those people in mind who speak the French variety of French. At first, DNS didn't know what to do with my Quebec accent. Then, I found the Spell function. How neat!

Thanks to the Spell function, I can now keep speaking in my natural accent and DNS understands me. It's all about the training. By using the Spell function, you train DNS to understand your accent. Otherwise, you would be training yourself to speak in an unnatural manner,... See more

I once successfully translated 13,000 words in a day. It was all thanks to DNS. Without it, my best daily output is 4,000 (and this is far from being usual). So, train that dragon - you will see there's much more to it than you expect. ▲ Collapse
