Hi all,
I was wondering if somebody can suggest a descent free software which would enable me to receive phone calls on my laptop. It's for telephone interpreting and I wanna use my landline number for it.

Open your control panel and look for "telephone and modem settings".
This should let you receive phone calls on your computer, provided your laptop is fitted with a modem.
You probably need other hardware, like earphones and mike.
I haven't actually tried this (except for sending faxes once in a blue moon), so experiment first.

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\dialer.exe
is default feature in Windows XP. I use it for making calls
(much easier to copy long phone numbers there than to dial manually),
but I don't know if it can receive calls.
And sure, landline should be plugged into your computer's modem "LINE" socket
and the phone in the "PHONE" socket.

TOPIC STARTER
It's not the end of the world, I guess. I just signed a new contract for telephone interpreting and it is extremely busy. I would like to have my headphones plugged into my laptop rather than into the phone, do my translations and be ready when the call comes through.

You can choose your own phone number and I believe they charge about 30 euros a year. You also get voice mail with it.

It's a great solution for both incoming and outgoing calls, and their international rates per minute are hard to beat.

My client is not using SKYPE and, to be perfectly honest, I'm not keen on it either. I would like something to allow phonecalls from landline to landline and my end to be my laptop (not a phone) with my headphones plugged in.

He doesn't have to use Skype. You get a perfectly normal "landline" number. You can be called from either a mobile, landline or a Skype number.

with skype if you pay you can call a landline holder anywhere on the planet ...my friend's father called her with it when she was in China and he was in Algeria the quality is good too ...or else you can use your landline with a modem as suggested...

Exactly. When I was in Spain, I think it cost me about 2 U.S. cents per minute to call land lines in the United States. Not bad, considering that my cell phone company charges 99 cents per minute for international calls.

2. If your - or your customer's - ISP is down, you can send files via Skype.
3. International conference calls with just a mouse click.
I wouldn't want to be without it.
