Hello all,
A client sent us a wmv movie to be 'translated'.
The movie is actually a slideshow with some music in the background. The client is willing to accept the 'translation' of screenshots in a presentation format (e.g. ppt), but I was wondering there are film editing tools out there for extracting>translating>inserting translation back to the movie?

I think the only way to 'translate' this material is to take screens, then 'translate' screens in a graphic software and create a presentation from the translated screens.

My suggestion

If I was in your case, I guess I would run those screenshots through FineReader or any other OCR application and translate the text. Then they should be able to produce new subtitles and encode them in a new movie themselves.
But wait, they expect you to actually replace the text on those screenshots and put it all back together? This needs to be charged extra, in my opinion.

easy way

1) Download Xilisoft Video Converter (free) and convert into AVI (XviD codec) [10 minutes]
2) Download VirtualDub (free) and export the video into separate frames (done automatically, there will be many JPG files in the specified folder) or manually extract the frames you need into JPG files [10 minutes]
3) Translate in any image editor (e.g. GIMP — free) [about 5 minutes per frame]
4) Combine into a presentation in PowerPoint. [10 minutes]
Done.

TOPIC STARTER
Seems that will have to 'translate' graphic frames

Hi all,
Many thanks for your input.
Subtitling is not an option, I'm afraid, as there is no soundtrack to be translated.
What we will have to do is to extract images from the wmv > 'translate' in a graphic soft / pdf editor (via OCR because there is approx. 25k words) > re-create the presentation + add sound + animation to try to follow the original movie.
Not a particularly sophisticated approach, but it seems that our options are pretty much limited.
