G'day everyone

I got myself a networked hard drive and I'm struggling to find a backup program that works nicely. If any of you have found a backup program that does what it's supposed to do, please let me know.

G'day everyone

I got myself a networked hard drive and I'm struggling to find a backup program that works nicely. If any of you have found a backup program that does what it's supposed to do, please let me know.

Specifically, my external hard drive is on the network, so it should be available at all times. The drive is mapped but can also be accessed by the IP address.

I want incremental backups and I want to be able to roll back to a previous version at least three days old. I want to be able to navigate to the backup folder and see actual files there and I want the ability to "restore" them manually (i.e. by copying) without the use of the backup program (if I wanted to). I want to be able to choose which folders should be backed up, and it would be nice if I could also specify files or file types to exclude from the backup. I want to schedule backups but I don't want the backup program to remain resident for ever, but I also want the backup to pick up from where it left off if I shut down the computer before a backup is finished. Oh, and I want a progress bar (amazing how many backup programs don't have it).

I have Windows 7 HP. What can you suggest? It doesn't have to be freeware but it shouldn't be horribly expensive. And I'm superstitious about single-purpose software whose installers are bigger than 100 MB.

Thanks
Samuel

Cobian Backup and SyncBack Dec 5, 2012

Cobian is free and SyncBackSE is shareware. I think they meet all your requirements except maybe for resuming the backup process after forced shutdown. Personally I have switched from SyncBack to Cobian but can recommend both these tools.

Macrium Reflect Professional Dec 5, 2012

I have been a happy user of Macrium Reflect Professional for several years now.

I don't have time to check whether it satisfies all of your criteria, but I think it might.

DriveClone Dec 5, 2012

I have used DriveClone for a while to backup my computer to a NAS unit and was quite happy with it, then for some obscure reason it wouldn't accept network targets after I upgraded the program (or maybe it was the NAS' firmware).
Since then I backup manually, but I will try it again sometime on my upgraded computer.

Cobian backup Dec 6, 2012

I am using Cobian backup. It should meet your requirements (with progress bar) except to resume backup after computer shut down.

I have used Macrium Reflect for a year (backing up) until I needed to restore what was stored. At that critical moment, Macrium Reflect offered me explanations why it was not possible. Now I know that until you have not RESTORED and have your data back (it concerned my system disk), you do not know anything concerning your "restore" program. I cannot recommend Macrium Reflect. What I can advise is to ask a simple question: Have you retrieved any data already?
