I'd be really grateful for a little advice on mobile phones from my freelance colleagues...
Because I've spent a lot of the last 2 years travelling I invested in a netbook with a pay-as-you-go mobile internet connection so I could work and manage my e-mail on the move.

I've now bought a house (eeek!) and am trying to settle down a little more but would still like to be able to leave the office (especially to spend a couple of hours in the gym) without losing jobs or having to drag the netbook around with me.
I live in Germany and definitely don't want a contract arrangement (I barely use my mobile privately, it's pretty much only for business purposes and 99% of job offers come by e-mail, so I need a basic smartphone that allows me to check my mail, open Word and PDF files (in order to see if they're suitable for me), and ideally take photos too.
I don't want to spend a fortune, I don't do the whole social networking thing and don't need to be able to be online 24-7, I just need to keep up with my mail account - unfortunately the range of mobiles available is so vast that I'm having difficulty choosing one.
Do you have a recommendation for a basic phone that can do what I need...ideally around the 80 - 150 euro price range?

Although its price is about 230 EUR, it is a decent tool you can use to answer emails, etc.
One huge advantage - physical QWERTY keyboard.

Well, my Android phone came with QuickOffice (not sure if is the full version, which would cost USD 20.00 anyway):

You say that you don't want a contract, but contracts start at EUR 15.00 or less, with a "free" smartphone attached to it, so why not go for something like that?

The staff advised me against the Samsung Star I was initially tempted by because, although it will open PDF and Word files, it is apparently terribly slow at doing so and that would be frustrating. According to the sales staff it would be better to spend 30 euros more and get a fairly speedy internet connection.
Because I really only use my mobile to take the odd incoming call and to have a phone in emergencies it just wouldn't be worth my while to sign up to a monthly contract; thankfully there has recently been a huge increase in pay-as-you-go internet deals so I'll compare them and select the one I find best.
Thanks for your attention and advice anyway, it's just wonderful to have a forum of "gleichgessinte" (sorry, German) that are willing to ffer help and advice.

A friend of mine has a Samsung smartphone (I'm afraid I don't know which model) and it has the on/off button just where her thumb naturally falls when she is talking, meaning that her phonecalls keeps on getting cut off by accident.

It's the best phone with qwerty keyboard. There are 3 generations, fourth one is coming soon (and 1st one is the best).
Unfortunately, it doesn't have many competetitors, manufacturers are ditching this format.
IMHO keyboard is a must for a translator's phone.
