Simple CAT Tool wanted (open source)

I'm looking for a simple cat tool that just splits the source texts into 2 colums, left source text, right translated text. It should be free and open source. It must be able to join sentences and split them nothing more. I don't need all the other funtions. Any ideas? Please don't suggest wordfast, Im look for a 2 Column splitting like in Deja Vu

MS Office is not open source, but you might have it already Aug 9, 2010

Open Office will work too. In the text editor (Word), replace all full stops with a full stop and a paragraph symbol (^p). You can also do the same with colons. Replace double paragraph marks with single ones ^p^p with ^p. Copy everything to the spreadsheet app (Excel) and paste in A1 and B1. Leave the columns there or copy them back to the text editor. Translate one column. Profit

Hey, thank you, this works smoothly! But can you tell me how I get 'Excel to show me only the A and B Column without all other colums?

Greetings

Joachim

OmegaT Aug 9, 2010

Try OmegaT,
very simple to use and free, however, I am not sure you can split or join segments (not sentences) yourself after the document's been processed by OmegaT.
You usually join or split segments in the alignment phase. OmegaT does not have an alignment tool, but you can possibily use a third-party one, such as bitext2tmx.

WordFast Classic is free to use until 500 translation units.

By translating with Wordfast and use the steps of Adam above, you get source and target segments in 2 coulmn. By rearranging with hidden texts (source text, translation tags etc.) to normal texts, WordFast is ideal.

In addition, wordfast Classic TM can do 2 column document as well (pasting texts to Excel or table in Word or equivalent spreadsheet and text editor in OpenOffice).

Best regards,

Soonthon L.

1. The only truly open-source CAT tool is, AFAIK, OmegaT.
2. What you are writing about with regards to WordFast is WF Classic; WordFast Pro with 2-column layout has been on the market since March (?) 2009.

Anyway I like the excel suggestion because whatever translation programm you use they all make mistakes and this is why you always have to process the source file prior to the translation. And Excel will always be excel, translation programs come and go regardless if there are new file formats that might not be supported. Does anybody know how I can create an excel file with only two colums A and B without other colums?

No need to use Excel Aug 9, 2010

Yes, but instead of replacing it with ^p, rather replace it with ^t^p. Then select all the text and go Table > Convert > Text to Table, and select tab as the delimiter. I think a similar thing also works in OpenOffice.org Writer.

Or, if you don't want to use ^t, simply select all text (after you've used your method of replacing with ^p) and go Table > Convert > Text to Table so that there is one column only. Then reduce the width of the column and go Table > Insert > Columns to the Right to insert an empty second column. If you want to duplicate the first column, select the first column and copy it, and then right-click anywhere in the table and go Paste Column (in OOo Writer it may work a little different).

Yes but it's not open source.

Yes but it's not open source. And it shows text above-and-below, not in two columns.

Virtaal Aug 9, 2010

I suppose it depends on your definition of a CAT tool

Virtaal shows the text in two columns, although the active segment is displayed above-and-below. Virtaal is quite rough around the edges, but if you're into open source, you might want to have a look at it.

The problem with Virtaal is that you have to convert your source text into a bilingual format before Virtaal can handle it. One such format is PO, so you can use TXT2PO for that (unfortunately TXT2PO segments by paragraph, not by sentence).

I wouldn't worry about the other columns in Excel. They should be empty and you can safely ignore them. There will always be empty columns to the right in Excel. If for any reason you are uncomfortable with them, copy the 2 columns back to Words to create a 2-column table. You can also follow Samuel's advice with tabs - it is indeed faster.

@Samuel Aug 9, 2010

Hi Samuel,
thanks for the info. I didn't notice Virtaal. As for file conversion, this really doesn't bother me. All modern CAT tools do this.

Regards,

Stan
