Last week I got an email with a JOB OFFER subject title coming from the address [email protected] and signed by Lori Conser.
The email didn't have any word count or rates; it said:
Hope this message finds you well?
We are looking for a skilled and reliable Portuguese translator to translate content from English to Portuguese in a formal and educative structure. The ideal candidate should have the following skills and experience:
Fluency in both language
- Proficient in translating written content accurately and maintaining the intended meaning
- Familiarity with formal language structures and convention
- Attention to detail to ensure accuracy and precision in the translation
- Ability to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality translations.
Kindly let us know your schedule, if you are open for a mutual collaboration on your side by attaching your CV/RESUME and provide any feedback you may have. We are eager to discuss this opportunity further and explore how we can work together.
Thank you for considering this collaboration. We look forward to getting a favourable response from you as well.
So I sent a reply, asking about more information regarding the project, to that email address and to another address I found on the website > [email protected].
Today, someone named Sam Henrie replied to me saying:
I am sorry, but this is a scam offer from someone impersonating our company.
So, dear colleagues, please beware of this scam targeting at stealing translators' resumes/CVs, and don't send any attached file ever.
Just ask for more information or send a Proz profile link.

Thanks for the heads up, Maria Laura.
I've never had to worry about this type of scam before, having always worked for companies. But as I've recently ventured into the freelancer world, I am at a loss at the amount of scamming going on. I've had to implement a "suspect first, and research, research..." attitude re. job offers. Luckily, this kind of post helps us all. Thanks again!

Yes, between the number of scams and the amount of shi*ty AI-related jobs, we are all becoming more like text detectives than translators.
I feel like the freelancing translation field is like quicksand, and scammers use AI to get more sophisticated and pass undetected.
So I spend a lot of time researching every single job offer because I don't trust any offer; even the offers posted here at Proz felt fishy sometimes.
These are difficult times, so we have to help each other.
