ProZ.com has a strong and active stand against scammers.

Active features have been recently implemented to prevent the simpler form of scam messages (like the dating- or Nigerian scams) from being sent via ProZ.com profiles, and over 400 messages from the bad guys have been captured and neutralized so far. As we gain experience in this front we expect to be able to kill most, if not all of these scams through ProZ.com profiles.

ProZ.com has a strong and active stand against scammers.

Active features have been recently implemented to prevent the simpler form of scam messages (like the dating- or Nigerian scams) from being sent via ProZ.com profiles, and over 400 messages from the bad guys have been captured and neutralized so far. As we gain experience in this front we expect to be able to kill most, if not all of these scams through ProZ.com profiles.

A second level of more sophisticated scams requires working together with the community in order to raise awareness on the methods and style used by this kind of criminals, and to share available information related to up-to-date scam activity.

A very active forum was created for the discussion of scams and a wiki page was created on the issue of detecting and reacting to false job offers and other scams.

Last February a new Translator scam alert center was announced to provide organized, concise information regarding false job offers and other scams which may be aimed at or are affecting language professionals.

ProZ.com members can subscribe to these alert messages (either receiving all reports or a weekly digest) and the messages can also be found in a dedicated wiki page. Twenty eight alerts have been sent so far and there are currently over 300 subscribers to the service.

There are other excellent sources of information on these issues. In particular I would like to recommend Aleksandra Narożna's article on ID Fraud in the Translation Industry: A guide on how to protect freelance translators and translation agencies against identity fraud published in the Translation Journal.

Please feel free to share questions and information, ideally through support. This is a serious issue and the best way of facing it is working together as a community.
