In one of the postings a member has remarked that one particular job posting led to a dialer. The present assignment I am translating involves a German Website and here I saw the sentence "Ausserdem dürfen Sie keine Dialer, Popups und Weiterleitungen (bzw. Frames) auf der Seite haben". Thus I came across dialer twice within a short period. Can somebody clarify about the dialers? Why are they undesirable? Dialers are indeed undesirable - I have also come across them at a couple of dodgy sites. It is a little program that installs itself on the computer and changes your internet settings if you have a dial-up connection. It changes the number you dial so that you go online dialling up some expensive sexline in often in a remote place like the Solomon islands etc. 20 dollars/minute etc. If not discovered that can lead to very high phonebills as in most cases the phone company takes no responsiblity. I discovered it straight away but then I had trouble deleting that program - it acted like a virus. So I ended up reinstalling windows and all.
There are several software packages on the market to protect against them - but I actually thought that my firewall took care of this - but no.

I work as Tech Writer for an antivirus producer. A dialer is a malware - a software program that is automatically and without the user's consent dialing a built-in phone numero(s). These dialers might be responsible for huge phone bills, as almost every time you will be dialing an international phone number and (worse) you might not be even aware of this if no popups are displayed, for instance.

These dialers might be responsible for huge phone bills, as almost every time you will be dialing an international phone number and (worse) you might not be even aware of this if no popups are displayed, for instance.
Dialers are in the same category as Spyware. You should be careful what sites you are surfing and no, you should not rely on your firewall to stop dialers, but rather on a reliable antivirus product.

My sincere thanks to all those, who have responded not only in the forum but also through emails. I am happy to say that I have since then installed Ad-Aware and it is really useful and works without any fuss. I am having AVG antivirus protection. Yet so far 97 spywares have been identified and quarantined.
One thing I don't understand. If a person is running huge telephone bills, only the telephone company benefits. What does the introducer of the dialer get out of it?
