Do you think a car mechanic would fix a gearbox for free when asked to only do an oil change or a plastic surgeon doing a nose-job would throw in a chin-lift as a freebie because he'd feel better about the end result?

Proofreaders and editors should learn to stick to the scope of their mandates; for some reason many feel they are contractually and/or ethically bound to retranslate. Granted this often happens because the job is accepted too prematurely.

Wake up!

We need to give credit to colleagues when it's due and applaud good/excellent work but conversely need to bring those masquerading as translators to account. Whey should someone delivering an atrocious translation get paid full whammy and the proofreader/editor receive a fraction of the fee and all of the stress?

We need to be firm when the need arises and say so immediately when something goes beyond the scope of proofreading and/or editing, preferably at the outset.

I enjoy (legal) proofreading and/or editing when that is actually what it is. As one colleague said to me the other day, it can be a welcome change of pace. Proofreading excellent work done by others helps keep you on your toes too - after all, how else do we rate our own skills without seeing what else is out there? But there is no way on earth, I'm going to do retranslate at a fraction of the price.

Giving it up isn't the answer. Being firm about the conditions under which you will do it is .

to facillate their home works and to kee tme for othe things
