Dear all,
I would really like to try project-open to at least see if I can put it to use. However, it seems that I already have cygwin installed on my system (I never asked for it, don't know why it's there by default) and project-open comes with its own version of cygwin, which can only be installed if I remove the existing cygwin installation. I am unable to do that since I have no clue about Unix AT ALL.

Go to www.cygwin.com and run or download setup.exe and cycle through: Install All, Install Default, and Uninstall All.
I wish I had a better web server to upload more of the snapshots of the uninstall process, but I have just uploaded one pic file (limited size) to my profile. Usually it takes some trial and error to finally arrive at the "Uninstall All" picture. After uninstalling all, one has to ... I believe RedHat uses "apt" for managing packages.
To remove a program you can type in the console as a root
Code:
| #apt-get remove package_name |
|
In this case this probably would be
root

| #apt-get remove cygwin |
|
However read carefully what the console asks, as cygwin may also try to remove some dependencies, necessary for other system's soft, which should not be removed.
You can read more details about apt-get by typing
in your console.
You may also try to install "Synaptic" frontend (if you don't have it yet), which will let you use apt-get in X, not in console. If you do have it, run it, search "cygwin" and remove it that way.

Are you on Windows?
If so, you can uninstall Cygwin if you go to Control Panel>Software.
Search for cygwin, and choose "uninstall". That should do the trick.

Thanks for the answers - I was not expecting many answers as this topic seems to be the kind nobody replies to.

But no matter what I try, I can't even find cygwin on my machine.
Then, having read all the different instructions on the net, I can tell that to uninstall this, I will need to have at least basic knowledge of how to use cygwin (I don't even know what it looks like!) because the uninstallation is done from within cygwin, as suggested by Anna. However, even though I am glad for Anna's instructions, I don't even know what the console she mentions is, so I can't find it. Maybe you can elaborate on this? I am sorry for asking for so much detail, but considering I don't even have the slightest understanding of what this is, I can't go far with instructions that assume I know my way around cygwin.
Of course, the cygwin installer doesn't provide for uninstallation, as I suspected. The cygwin website itself provides only a manual, internal walkthrough for uninstalling cygwin, so if it was feasible through the installer, they probably would have mentioned this.
I just don't understand why I have this on my machine. It seems it was installed by default before it was delivered. I don't much like having something on my computer I didn't ask for and never use that can later prevent me from using that machine the way I would like it to. This leaves me wondering what else I will find down the road that will prevent me from using my machine in the future...

The "console" is a Linux application that enables you to enter command-line commands on a Linux system. I presume that something similar is also provided by Cygwin.
apt-get is a command for managing packages (applications) on Debian-based Linux systems. I may be wrong but I don't think this is relevant to your situation.
