An IT expert told me today that one of the various reasons why the software industry has taken off so successfully in India is that Indians have a natural aptitude for programming because of the structure of their languages and hence of their mentality.
Can anyone confirm, elucidate or deny?

He he... I live in New Delhi, India.  But in the serious vein, I am not sure if our languages have any such \"structure\" which is programming specific. This would be a myth and I would love to dispel it. Well, it is a fact however that we can be absolutely hard working... we can work hard and can work long hours; also we can be extraordinarily patient... this might make for a good programmer.

I don\'t know anything about Indian languages but I can tell you that in Israel Orthodox Jews are considered to make good programmers. Talmudic studies require a lot of attention to detail (different interpretations may be based on a single suffix or prefix), and this is excellent training for programmers.

Actually I read that the best language for programming was Aymará, which is spoken in Bolivia and part of Peru.

To add to reasons attributed by Roomy, the Indian education system puts a lot empahsis on maths and associated logics which is base of computer programming.

I wonder what would a translator charge for translating/localizing Microsoft products from Aymará into other languages...

I was thinking more along the lines of the internal structure of these languages and the thought patterns of native speakers, rather than the language actually used in the programming process.
For instance, syntactically, the German language is quite tightly structured and German speakers are renowned for their powers of logical thinking. Italian, on the other hand, while still fairly structured, is vowel-based and rhythmic, so lends itself beautifully to expression thr... See more

Not knowing anything about programming, I wondered if there was
something like an inherent programming-specific logic in the minds of native speakers of Indian languages!

I remember some years ago that people with Latin skills were most wanted for management positions or technical positions due to their logical thought, provided presumably by the way Latin organizaed the world. I really don't know if that was so and recruiters really looked for that. But I do remember having read much about Sapir-Whorf hypothesis that language determined the way we think.
