Is there any convention whether the "day" in D-day (Normandy invasion) should have a capital "D" or not?

The oficial Dutch spelling is D–day.

The Guardian uses "D-day" for the historical event and for its figurative use:

New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors has "D-Day".

I can't imagine ever writing "D-day" in a US context: Minimal capitalization is never used in this kind of context there. I know this convention from the UK (where either version may be required), but I have no idea what applies in Canada or elsewhere in the world.

So, there are different conventions and I would say "D-Day" is probably the safer bet. ▲ Collapse
