I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me what language the text at following URL is.

A rough translation wouldn't be bad either, but I can ask a translator once I know the language in question.

Thank you.

I might be wrong of course, but as far as I am concerned it looks more like a handwritten copy of a non deciphered computer text.

Very likely wrong code page: I didn't find xñpóôçò anywhere and I wonder whether ÷ is included in any alphabet..

Greek? Aug 20, 2003

The image quality is rather poor, but they do look like Greek letters and diacriticals.

Not Greek Aug 20, 2003

It is definetely not Greek. There are some Greek characters there but they are not all Greek. It seems to me thay these letters belong to various alphabets.

Maybe it's Cyrillic in the wrong code? Aug 20, 2003

It could also be Cyrillic (Russian) in the wrong code too.

I don't think it is wrong coded Cyrillic Aug 20, 2003

Wrong coded Cyrillic does not, in my experience, result in such wild amount of diacritics. I agree though, that it must be an undeciphered computer text. No language uses so many diacritics, except for artificial alphabets, perhaps.

I found out.. Aug 20, 2003

..the two words in the upper right corner:
äåí õðÜñ÷åé means: δεν υπάρχει
(What a pity I don't speek Greek..)

Wonder how I did it? Take a close look at the Google hit I mentioned .. the first line corresponds to the third line

Not Bulgarian anyway Aug 20, 2003

I notice that these are all characters from the second half of the code table - therefore it must be a language whose code table keeps the Latin characters in the first half, and its own characters insteda of the accented ones in the second half.

Also note that there are some Latin characters (namely p and x). If I remember correctly, the Russian DOS coding made use of Latin characters that look identically to Cyrillic ones (like o, a) albeit not always phonetically identical (like Lat. p = Cyr r, Lat. x = Cyr h etc.), while locating only the specific Cyrillic characters in the code range from 128 to 255.

It is not Bulgarian Cyrillic coding - neither Windows, nor DOS - that's for sure, I checked. Bulgarian DOS Cyrillic has the entire Cyrillic alphabet (incl. graphically identical characters) in the second half of the code table.

Could be an Asian language, too. Sorry, that's all I can say.

I don't have an answer but I do have a suggestion Aug 21, 2003

The experts on minority languages are Wycliffe Bible translators and their training arm - the Summer Institute: http://www.sil.org/. They have a site called http://www.ethnologue.com/

If it's a transcription of a language spoken by a minority group anywhere in the world they're likely to know. Try there.
