...What's your favorite Mac to work with?
Does anyone work with the latest Macbook pro 17"? How do you like it?

Thank you

iMac 21" Feb 13, 2011

...because of the large screen. 24" or 27" would be better, of course!

(I don't need portability when using the Mac, but I do envy the backlit keyboard of Pro Mac laptops)

Cheers,
Stefano

Get an iMac Feb 14, 2011

I personally don't like my Macbook Pro as a main translation machine because it does not have DEL and INS keys. Although, I use it as a backup machine with Windows and Trados installed with Parallels.

iMac or Mac Pro would be the best choice if you want 2-in-1 (work and fun). With MB Pro, you'd have to use a Apple MB110 keyboard to get all the keys to work with CAT-tools efficiently and the separate keyboard kills the mobility...

screen size vs. resolution Feb 14, 2011

Thank you. But I just sold my iMac27", although I didn't really want to, but when you have a family sometimes you have to compromise. I had a 20" before that, my first Mac, and I love it. Late last year I also got a Macbook 13" for mobility and fun, but then I moved to a house where the only place I could put my iMac was in the basement, which got pretty cold this winter and with a musky smell (Not good for my asthma). With that I saw myself working more on my Macbook, and with no big problems actually. After deciding selling the 27", my hubby suggested we get a lcd monitor to hook up the laptop so I could have the bigger screen, but I didn't realize that the resolution would be an issue. My eyes are having a hard time adjusting. Plus, we discovered that Windows looks way better than the Mac on the 25" 1080p LED monitor... why? Apparently it has something to do with alias text smoothing of the iOS that makes the text looks kind of blurry. Very eye irritating to me. So... as I saw portability is something I enjoy... even just to move around the house, or go to a bookstore or coffee shop to work and change scenarios a little bit, screen resolution has turned into a more important feature.

That's why I'm thinking on trying to get a 17", maybe used or refurbished. This is why I would like to know what's your fav Mac to work with and why, and if someone works with a 17", how do you like it?

Thank you very much!

I don't want to go back to Windows Feb 15, 2011

I have Windows on bootcamp to be used only when necessary. I enjoy and want to keep using macs, but I need to choose wisely, cause it's going to be my work computer for a long time.
So, is 17" or even 15" (macs display resolutions) confortable to work translating? Does anyone work with a 13" with no extra displays?
I wish Apple hadn't quit on the 24" display.

15" MBP works, but only just Feb 15, 2011

I worked on my 15" MBP for over a year (before deciding it was worth the expense to get an iMac 21"). I found it perfectly fine at the time, particularly when I could hook up an extra screen to hold my browser windows.

Working with Word was fine. I find that the screen can hold two documents side by side quite comfortably, but that it gets a little annoying to have to switch back and forth to a browser or other application when that is needed. The 17" MBP has a higher resolution scr

The 17" MBP has a higher resolution screen, so it should be even better.

I did find it a bit on the large side to carry around. It does not fit comfortably in a standard rucksack or bag, and I suppose the bigger model is even more cumbersome. On the other hand, I commuted to work, and had to carry it a great deal (and am now in want of a 13" laptop, so I may be biased).

Thanks Maria Feb 15, 2011

I understand why you want a 13". That's why I got one after having my iMac for over a year. But... It has to go... Maybe when my work load is bigger I'll have 2 again

Thank you
