Hi everyone, i'd like to have some clues to start some translation work.
I'm a native french speaker and i would like to translate from english to french.
i've done a lot subtitling, translation, and interpretor work but never for money.
I've done that for years but i never use "Cat tools" i did everything on vegas pro for Youtube (captioning, translation, time code, etc...) and also interpretor work but never in real time.

You can exploit your exploits as well. Work experience is always a good tool to keep in your bag. Even better if you are allowed to share the works you've done in the past to potential employers as a portfolio. Your proficiency in Vegas Pro is quite a big gun you have there (assuming you have a professional level knowledge of using it). If possible, I suggest familiarizing yourself with Adobe Premier and DaVinci Resolve as well. You can branch out to video editing career, or offer it as an added value to market your subtitling service.
Be patient when your efforts don't seem to bear fruit. I know in these days and age, instant gratification is what most people are after. But as the old saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day. To counter that argument, you will need to realize when your way isn't going to work. Know when to switch tactics. Remember: survival isn't about controlling the situation, but adapting to it.
Watch out for scammers. You can browse the subforum below to have a gist about their modi operandi. These are usually the same old tricks being recycled over and over again. But always be on guard for the much more sophisticated methods out there.

As a final advice, always be willing to learn new things. Once you feel that you've known everything, it's when you're going to meet your demise.

Here's an idea: I don't know if TED Talks is currently recruiting volunteers. If they are, and you are not in a pressure to start making money immediately, you can do some volunteer subtitling jobs for them while waiting for your first client to contact you. They have proper style guidelines. You'll work in CaptionHub and they should give you the necessary training. An editor will review your works and you can ask their input to improve your skills. Lastly, you can share them as your portfolio to advertise yourself. Hey, at least it's better than just sitting around doing nothing, right?
But please be cautious when a random agency or a translator is offering you a volunteer job. They could be just subcontracting their projects and claim all the payments for themselves, while you're the one who did the actual works. ▲ Collapse

You presumably do have some kind of educational/work history though.
Sometimes people come on here saying they've got 'no experience' and then it turns out they have a ready-made specialism through having worked in a particular industry for years. What's your work background?
What about studies? Do you have a degree? Have you ever had anything published?
All sorts of things can count to building up a profile.
You do need more than just two languages though.

I do have a background but nothing to do with languages. I was a pastry chef ( my diplome is also in that domain) and now i work in kitchen. Do you think i need to learn to be fluent in more than two languages ?

List it up, anyway. Who knows you'll thrive in the culinary/pastry or tourism translation field? I failed to get hold of it. But you may have a much better luck than I did, considering that pastry chef is a really high position in the kitchen brigade.

That's not a bad idea, i'll try it.
For now i'm trying to learn as much as i can about the localization field and the "cat tools".

Sorry for being unclear - that's not what I meant. I wouldn't necessarily recommend learning more languages.
I meant to say that there is more to being a translator than just languages. For example, you will need to be an excellent writer in your target language, have some kind of specialism, and have business skills, etc.
Food translation is definitely a valid specialism though so your background as a chef is worth highlighting. There are lots of food-related businesses out there.
