Ikea changed the Chinese name of its stuffed wolf toy because the earlier version sounded like a vulgarity in Cantonese, after the toy became a symbol of government opposition in Hong Kong.
The new name of the plush toy wolf from the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale contains the Chinese character for “good fortune.” The earlier name sounded like a vulgar anatomical reference in the Cantonese dialect which uses the same characters as Mandarin but pronounces them differently.

China lifts 14-year-old ban on gaming consoles
China has lifted its longtime ban on video game consoles, opening a lucrative new market for manufacturers including Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.
The State Council said in a statement that it will now allow consoles to be manufactured in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, an experimental testing ground for economic reform.
Had absolutely no idea that China had a ban on video game consoles. That said, I was always wondering why people would get addicted to playing on-line games at Internet cafes.

As for the language, Plaza, the New Mexico professor, said a recent examination by her research students concluded that the translations were done “by a computer-generated process” and came across as awkward.
“There are problems with the verbs and word order that make sentences hard to understand,” said Plaza, who helped develop an audio version to help residents in New Mexico sign up.
“Sometimes,” she added, “it’s just the terms they use.”
The website translates “premium” into “prima,” but that Spanish word is more commonly used to mean a female cousin, Plaza said. A more accurate translation, she said, would be “cuotas,” ”couta mensual” or “costo annual.” ▲ Collapse

他表示，此前在紐約的一次頒獎禮中，宣佈過自己這次來美國的目的之一是洽談收購或控股《紐時》。但由于那次太早放出收購《紐時》消息，導致目前無法會見股東。
據陳光標透露，他透過一名紐約華人的介紹，曾與《紐時》一個股東見過一次面，又通過數次電話，並約定5日晚見面。但在收購消息曝光后，雙方就沒再見面。
否認是作秀行為
「我開始不應該放風。」陳光標指「這個怨我自己！」。他仍打算嘗試去上門拜訪《紐時》董事局。他還強調，收購《紐時》是出自真心，並非像部分媒體報導的作秀行為。

I don't know about Canada, but I think the U.S. is conscientiously trying to bring in more new blood and talent to offset the subpar performance seen in our elementary education system that we constantly hear about these days. But I could be wrong.

Thank God it's only fog, not that perma-smog that's always plaguing some of China's eastern cities. But yesterday I read a news article about increased smog levels on the West Coast. They say it might be the particulates from industrial emissions traveling all the way across the Pacific and reaching the U.S. western coast.
