How to translate .pages documents

  • Add ‘.zip’ to the file name.
  • Open the zip.
  • Get index.xml.
  • Translate it in a good CAT tool, like CafeTran Espresso on your Mac.
  • Export your translation.
  • Copy the translated index.xml back to the zip file.
  • Remove '.zip' from the document name.
  • Check your translation in Apple Pages.

Export the document from Pages to Word, if you have a Mac.

Or ask the client to do it.

Translate the Word document with CafeTran.

Lossless conversions Mar 26, 2022

I’ve never seen a lossless conversion between documents of wordprocessors.

In your scenario you’d even need two conversions to get a Pages document back.

No XML file in the archive Apr 8, 2024

Hi!
There is no XML file inside. I see only IWA files. Do you have any idea how to proceed?

That's not going to be lossless, though.

This worked, I opened the XML file in Trados Studio without any issues.
My intention was to save to my client the time for copy-pasting the edits from the reviewed PDF one by one. So I decided to go and work on the XML file. If there are losses, then I can export the trackchanged version from Studio and the client will have to import the changes manually. I hope that the losses will be not so important and the client will be OK with them.
