...may be true, but there's still a surplus of desperately cheap translators in certain combinations and domains, so I would refrain from providing them hope here until they have finally gone

The fact AI apps or MT engines produce more or less 'fluent' language without spelling mistakes and mostly without grammar mistakes has a lot to do with that human intervention. Without the latter they simply wouldn't be able to do that.

I seem to be getting such emails on a weekly basis as well. It's always from countries like India, China, Vietnam, Singapore and London (that is in Moldova, I should say London, Moldova).
I have yet to receive such an offer from an agency located in Norway, Switzerland or France (with their 17 cents per word paying old school, boutique agencies idyllically tucked away in rural Denmark or France, it's as if such countries are blissfully ignorant of the wonders of the mighty ChatGPT!)

One wonders if they actually rely on AI to bridge the centuries-long economic, cultural and political gap between themselves and the affluent, privileged West. Maybe the wonderful ChatGPT will help them compensate for their shortcomings in economy, democracy, human rights, arts, sports etc.? If that's the case, then 7 USD per hour is a small price to pay (from their POV) and helping the poor old third world pay back to the haughty imperialist West is a worthy cause than chaining yourself to a tree (if you're that way inclined), and therefore it justifies 'modern slavery' and digging your own grave as a translator.

Until a few months ago DeepL kept on producing 'produkt' as the Dutch translation for 'product', while the correct translation doesn't differ from the English term 'product'. In the meanwhile it doesn't make that mistake any longer. I presume because there has been a human intervention to correct that mistake.

EVERYBODY knows about ChatGPT, and often they think it can do EVERYTHING. They may be wrong, but that's what they think. So you want to book a holiday apartment? Ask ChatGPT to write the mail. You want to send a birthday greeting to your aunt, who's ill? ChatGPT will do it for you. You have some text to translate...

An Italian pal of mine lives in Mexico and told me in January he wanted me to translate the intro to an exhibition catalogue from Spanish to English (it would have been a favour, unpaid). Yesterday he called and said, no need: ChatGPT did it. In fact ChatGPT translated the intro into EN, IT and, for the laugh, the dialect from the mountain valley in Lombardy where his family lives.
What about the quality, I asked him? He thinks it's fine. The Italian is better than he'd produce. (He's a university graduate who works in the cultural area.)
So I think we might be seeing a massive impact at source, removing potential clients from the market before they even think of approaching a professional or an agency. ▲ Collapse

these translators also work faster than their shadow because they deliver their work within a fraction of a second...

...what some of them told me when I declined their offer to network with them: One very prominent German forum and KudoZ participant boasted towards me in a private email that she was able to translate 800 words per hour, no matter what subject and no matter what time of the day and without getting exhausted in any way. That was the reason why she only could offer € 0.05 to become part of her team.
