I have 5 computers for different customers, ranging from XP, Vista and 7.
I will never buy a computer with Win 8 on it, I do not like the way Microsoft is forcing people into using that stupid smartphone stuff on a computer, even if they have the start button again

Windows 8.1 is now out and that's better than the original dreadful Windows 8.

As mentioned the other day, I use iOS on a MacBook and I have no intention to install parallels or virtual windows (even if this limits a lot my options for CAT tools).
Reason: I love Mac stations and their system, their user-friendliness and the way everything is at hand and logical, and for that I would not go back to windows (with its million questions and crashes and procedures)

I still use Windows XP on my desktop, Windows 7 on my laptop, however, I never really use that.
If I change operating systems, it definitely won't be to Windows 8 (or whichever version of that is available). I don't need that smartphone stuff on my desktop, thank you very much.

To be exact, 3 different Linux distributions and I occasionally use Windows 7 to check compatibility of certain files.

Ditto. IMHO, XP is still the best OS Microsoft have come up with in terms of compatibility. I also have 2 laptops with W7 - which I was dragged into kicking and screaming - but have never grown to like it. I also had to buy a software package that makes the W7/Office 2010 interface look like XP, so that I could continue to work at my normal rate without being forced to waste precious time learning how to use the darn thing.
So, even when the official "support" for XP stops, I intend to try to continue using it as long as possible.

All the new computers I looked at had Windows 8, but I had already seen it at school and knew I didn't want it. I could have custom-ordered a new one with Windows 7, but it was much more expensive than the ones selling on the shelf. So I bought a refurbished computer that runs Windows 7. I use Windows XP and I don't see any reason to change it. I am used to it, it's not complicated, I don't have any problems with it neither I feel limited in any way. I tried Win 7; it's not bad, but somehow I didn't like it. I don't even think about Win 8.

And I'm holding on to it for as long as I can, yes, even when MS stops providing updates and patches for XP next April.
Why give up something that has served me so well and efficiently over many years?

Isn't that a problem nowadays with XP? I kept it until a couple of years ago, and I agree it was the best, although I've adapted perfectly well to W7 (apart from the file search which I detest). But even a couple of years ago, there were more and more problems with viruses, malware, spyware and every other sort of thing coming in through holes in the XP OS. I would have thought it would be risky to use it for professional purposes once it isn't being supported. But then again, I have to be ultra-cautious as I know so little about these things.
When I was sharing a computer, my partner used to refuse to upgrade anything and it led to really extreme problems at times, in fact every time we changed computer we practically had to throw away everything we'd ever done as there was no way we could load the ancient versions of programs and/or OS and nobody provided upgrades from such old versions. I don't want to get caught that way again. ▲ Collapse

My laptop that died last year (and which had served me all through Uni and beyond) had Vista, which I had gotten used to over a 7 year period. When buying a new laptop I was able to "build" it online and had a choice of Windows 7 or 8.
It wasn't a hard decision to go with Windows 7.
I do regret, however, choosing Office/Word 2013 over Word 2010 or 2007. But that's another discussion.

I agree, Ty. Office 2013 adds more complications.
