Hello,

I wonder if there is any possibility to translate Across projects in other tools? I mean the projects which are to download from the customer's server.

You can use Across personal edition Jan 26, 2011

You can use Across personal edition to handle the projects of customer server, as it is free. However, I am not sure about the possibility of using another CAT tool for Across format.

No Across please Jan 26, 2011

I do not want to use Across, I work with the software since two or three years and this is the worst CAT I have ever seen. Therefore I ask for other solutions.

Maybe export a bilingual file? Jan 26, 2011

Hi,

I don't know if this is possible with Across, but perhaps you can get an export of the bilingual information as an XLIFF or TTX and then you can work on this with Studio, or most other CAT tools.

Is this possible with Across?

Regards

Paul

Check-Out Jan 26, 2011

I don't use Across Server, only standalone.

In the Standalone Edition I would:

1. Check-out the document (File -->Close Task -->Project (select project) -->Check-out.

Then you will have the document in Word or whatever format it is, and you can use your favorite CAT tool.

After translation, to bring it back to Across, you can:

1 Create a TMX memory file and import it into Across (Crossboard -->Administration -->CrossTank Manage

2. Pre-translate the document.

Or:

2. Align your translation with the document in Across (Crossboard --> Alignment Wizard)

As I said, I use the Standalone edition, and I don't know if you can do it in the Server Edition, but it is worth a try.

And if I may be so bold, I consider Across the best Cat tool I ever came across.

Good Luck.

Tasks from Server Jan 26, 2011

Hello Walter, thank you for these useful hints!

I have a standalone version as well. What I mean are the projects (tasks) which are created at the customer side. I download the tasks from the customer's server, translate them and upload again. So I want to download the things and then to translate them in another tool, not in Across.

I would never come to the idea to translate other things in Across. I work with it only for customers who has it too and give me these prepared tasks.

Tastes differ. I have worked with 10 or 15 tools and Across is the only one I really hate.

Hi Paul,

Across does not support xliff or ttx files as translatable files. But I think SDL can add a TMX filter for translation of TMX files. DVX has one, and it works great.

Hello Selcuk, thank you very much for the link! I hope it helps but I am afraid they discuss only CWU files.

I found there one sentence which exactly reflects all my feelings while I am working in Across:

We have looked at it and to use it to translate would be like returning to the dark ages.

Yes, it would be great. I would not say that Trados is the best tool in the universe but after all it is much, much better than Across.

Hi Selcuk,

I read the yahoo link and it looks as though the DVX filter is just taking the target text from the copied source TMX and translating that rather than it being a true bilingual filter. Is this correct?

If so, you're right and we have one already but haven't published it because you can make it in a couple of minutes using the Custom XML features.

Nice to know about the TMX export from Across though, I didn't know that.

Paul

AFAIK, DVX's TMX filter imports TMX files as bilingual files. So, it may be possible to create a filter in TagEditor or Studio.

But what about creating a filter for Across files, without the TMX route. Across projects can be saved as .ara files for backup purpose (which are zipped mdb files). They have a complex structure for me but I believe SDL engineers can do it easily

That sounds good Selcuk. So if the TMX already had different source and target when exported from Across you would see this in DVX? As opposed to copying the source to target first and then translating the target (that's really the source)?

For us this would be an OpenExchange ( http://www.sdl.com/en/language-technology/partners/sdl-openexchange/ ) project for anyone who wanted such a bilingual filter. Actually I believe the SDK contains an example for this so perhaps we'll see them coming out in the future for a variety of bilingual formats.

Sounds like another OpenExchange project, if there is really a demand for these types of files? Perhaps someone will take this on too, not sure there is interest for an SDL engineer though;-)

Yes, in DVX you can see both the source and target segments, not only the copied source segments.

In fact there are many translators who want to translate Across project with their preferred CAT tool. See for example another recent thread http://www.proz.com/forum/transit_support/190424-handling_across_projects_in_transit_xv.html

I am not sure if such a filter can be created in OpenExchange.

Hi Selcuk,

What makes you think this? I would be very surprised if this was so.
