Once you've had two monitors, you can't manage with only one. Most Pcs and laptops bought after late 2006 seem to have graphics cards that can handle 2 monitors.

Right-click on your desktop, then Properties - Settings. See if your display can handle 1 or 2 monitors.

On Yahoo TW group I've read about people with their laptop monitor plus and adaptor and enabling software to handle another 2 or even 3 monitors - 21" wide or more too! They seem to be addictive, but havi

They seem to be addictive, but having the extra space makes life so much easier. Far less jumping between windows. When I renew my laptop, its a wide, wide second screen for me!

2 monitors are better than 1 Jan 22, 2010

I totally agree with you, Simon. Once you try multiple monitor setup, there's no way back. More desktop space means less headache with window switching.

I agree, once you're used to it, there's no going back! And much less pain in the eyes too...
Have a nice day

Very recent set-up here, I still need to adjust!

I sometimes use my laptop on the side, for some specific references for instance, I suppose that makes it 3 occasionally

Need to tidy up my desk and make some space for a 2nd monitor.

But I don't agree with the poll alternatives:

>3 means more than 3 monitors, i.e. 4 or more.
Shouldn't this be ">2" or "3 or more"?

Agree!

It's just like this: I can't imagine how I managed with only one monitor before!

Like most earthlings, I only have two eyes, both of which I require to focus on most things.
Seriously though, I have a PC for working with (1 screen) under normal conditions and a laptop for working when travelling or simply on the move. Otherwise, the laptop is more or less permanently linked to the TV+wifi for entertainment purposes.
I have never worked with either a split screen or more than one monitor and don't really understand the need. I suppose that if I wanted, I could wor

I have never worked with either a split screen or more than one monitor and don't really understand the need. I suppose that if I wanted, I could work with the laptop and TV screens, so would have a 32 inch monitor and a 15 inch to use simultaneously, as well as the 17" PC screen, but I cant think why the need would ever arise.
I would be interested to find out exactly why the people who do so actually need them.
I suppose it encourages head movement, which may or may not be a good thing, and for some technical situations it might be necessary, but as far as I can see in my current situation it would just be an(other) unnecessary expense.

I only use one 24-inch monitor, which gives me enough space to view the document I work on, a browser and one or two resized pc dictionary/glossary windows.
I'm with neilmac, I'd like to know about the productivity benefits of using several monitors

A trick for 2 monitors Jan 22, 2010

Being an itinerant type, I am mostly stuck with the only monitor of my laptop, but sometimes I hook up an external monitor, too. Having played with several different arrangements, I finally settled on the (bigger) external monitor being above the laptop and 40-50 cm behind it. Refocusing between the two monitors exercises the eyes and reduces eye fatigue quite a bit.

2 monitors Jan 22, 2010

1st - internet, mail, dictionaris etc. - landscape
2nd - only for Word, TE etc - portrait (rotated for 90°)

While translating, for instance with Trados - landscape monitor for TWB, concordace, Multiterm etc, portrait for TE only

Currently 2, usually 1 Jan 22, 2010

At the moment, I am using both a Mac and a PC, because the CAT only runs on the PC. However, I do all of my term searching on the Mac.
While it was suggested I could simply partion the Mac's harddrive and run Windows there, I saw no reason to invite viruses-R-us onto my primary computer.

When using my other CAT, which runs on the Mac, I am perfectly happy with one monitor.

Both computers are laptops.

BTW, haven't we run this poll before?

2 monitors mean to me an excess: human sight works more in a wider range of vision, more energy consume. To me, 2 monitors are like fast food: wehave to pay some bucks to receive the all-you-can-eat combo instead of a well prepared menu with a little less but more healthy food.

1 monitor is OK, particularly if we work with 2 or 3 windos tiled on screen with a proper resolution.

1 or 2 is enough I think Jan 22, 2010

I'm still waiting for somebody to post something ridiculous like '12' or '18' monitors.

e.g. "I live in an encapsulated world of monitors and really enjoy a personalised sphere-like life!"

Is this the way the world is going? Monitors on the wall, in every room, everywhere you go? A second monitor for practical work purposes, fine, but three or more... that's just daft.
