I always charge per source word, unless it's transcription, where they normally pay per minute. It doesn't matter if I'm working with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, InDesign, etc. | | | Same rate per word for different formats? | Jul 26, 2009 |
My production rate is not only much lower for formats such as Excel/Power Point etc, in comparison to Word, but also far less predictable. If you charge by word for other formats, do you have different rates for each format? (I charge by the hour).
I claim a percentage surcharge for all other formats than Word. Even if translating Excel sheets, for example, with a CAT tool is much better than without (then it really was a horror for me), it's still a lot slower and uncomfortable.

Where possible I copy the text into a Word file and calculate the character count, then add a surcharge for the trouble! | | | lillkakan Local time: 16:43 English to Swedish depends on project | Jul 26, 2009 |
I absolutely loathe spreadsheets when used for storing massive amounts of text. Who ever thought that was a good idea?! Whenever possible I just copy the columns to a text editor and translate with my CAT tool the normal way. Doesn't incur much more work than the usual fixing of formatting in Word after CAT tool clean up. It's when they have advanced macros and locked sheets and cells that I go really crazy and usually also charge per hour for the extra work, just like I do for Pow... If you mean table calculations or worksheets in Excel, then by word. Or is something else meant here? | | | Rebekka Groß (X) Local time: 15:43 English to German translate in Tag Editor | Jul 26, 2009 |
and charge per word as usual.

I charge per word. Although I'm probably going to add a surcharge to the next PowerPoint project, since they seem to involve *way* more formatting to get the languages straight. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: How do you charge for a translation in spreadsheet format?
