Pah! Paying the rent and bills every months, social security etc. while managing to have some sort of life beyond work. These are what could be defined my short term goals.
Long term - probably, some day, finalizing at least some of the seemingly insurmountable beaurocratic obstacles of the Spanish state regarding vehicle ownership and transfer...
Personally, I have an aversion to specific target-setting, which, for example, has seen the virtual demise of the National Health Service

Personally, I have an aversion to specific target-setting, which, for example, has seen the virtual demise of the National Health Service in the UK and often appears to be no more than a general waste of time, or stating the obvious.
I guess one person's meat is another's poison.

Short, medium, and long. Jul 21, 2009

Short-term goals: Feed, dress, and entertain my family, pay the taxman, and the bank.

Medium-term goals: Improve my craft skills. Get increasingly better clients and move higher up the rate scale.

Long-term goals: Stay healthy, prosperous, and optimistic. Give back more than I take out.

I like that! Same here, although for me it would be more of a daily goal than a long-term one. The future's so uncertain in so many respects, so I just take one day at a time (or one translation at a time!).

The only long-term goal I have is to learn new languages (but it's not a goal with a set date, I just study every year and see where it takes me).

I answered : both.

My short term goals are procedural: creating templates, compiling TMs, glossaries, research on terms/subject areas, etc.

My long term goals include improving administration systems, learning new languages/ improving existing language skills, etc.

I guess my view of 'professional goals' is a little narrow.

As Catherine said, one day at a time - the future doesn't belong to me and the past is behind me. I can apply lessons learned in the past to what I'm doing in the present, without forgetting to make the most of "today".

That having been said, in my opinion we all need some kind of goal, so I guess my short-term ones, in professional terms, would be:

Reading as much as possible in source and target languages to improve my knowledge of them
Glossary building<

Glossary building
Improving IT and tehnical skills

Long-term professional goals for me are:

Diploma in Translation
Other languages

From a personal point of view, health and happiness for myself and mine, remembering to enjoy what I have and not to strive for what I don't need, and who knows, maybe I'll write that novel one day!

Good topic!

Success!

both, but not a lot Jul 21, 2009

Professionally speaking:
long term: more clients (which leads to improve constantly) and better rates (which means work less for the same money and have more time for my children)
short term: survive! (rent, bills, taxes, and everything that seems to make my money run away as soon as it reaches my pocket).

In addition to what's been said already:

Short term:

- My goal this year was to pass the IoL DipTrans, which I did.

Long term:

- to qualify as an interpreter
- glossary building etc.
- to give up teaching
- to continue improving my language skills.

My and my husband's long term goal is to find the place to spend the rest of our life with good food and weather, where there is no stress!

Short term: replace front suspension of my Volvo
Long term: make more money
Money can't buy happiness. But it sure makes misery easier to live with.

Very interesting topic! Especially as you think about your goals concretely and it feels good to put them down in words Here are mine:

Short term: get over the crisis, find more clients, improve my language skills, start sepcialising in a new field (medicine)

Long term: start a network (or maybe even my own agency) to work close together with fellow translators personally, specialise in DTP to be able to
