G'day everyone

I've saw on a mailing list that Wordfast will be increasing its price in January 2011 so that the WFC and WFP products are sold separately, for USD 350.00 each, or together for USD 500.00.

Will the poor-country discount still apply to these products (or to the combined product), and if so, what will the discount be (or what will be discounted price be)?

Thanks
Samuel

Purchase through ProZ.com to save Nov 2, 2010

Hi Samuel, I will reach out to Kristyna and see if there are prices set for those nations where a discount off the normal price applies.

In the meantime, if anyone is interested in purchasing Wordfast Studio (both Classic + Pro) at an 18% discount off the current price (which is increasing substantially on 1-1-2011) please add your name to the current Wordfast TGB at http://www.proz.com/tgb

Bad news for one reason. Nov 2, 2010

My main concern is that in order to push both pieces of software (i.e. avoid cannibalisation), they'll restrict in the new features in WF PRO releases. I think we can kiss goodbye the badly longed for bilingual file production...

Hmmm, I don't think it's worth it Nov 2, 2010

I don't think WFP is a mature project. I've been using it from time to time for two years, and I am still not happy.

I might consider MemoQ or Dejavu X.

Edit: a slip.

Can MemoQ and Dejavu X create, read and write WFP's TMs and TXML files?

I only use Mac OS X, so I stick to WF (I purchased WF Pro particularly requested by one of outsourcers but used it only once.) Do you know if MemoQ or Dejavu X offer a Mac version?

Not sure, but I assume they're more stable Nov 3, 2010

Not sure. However, all WF files are "plan text" so I don't think there should be any problem converting them.

Does MemoQ/Dejavu X crash on opening plain text file...? I've had that with WFP.

Wordfast Classic is a great tool, and I will keep investing in it. But for WFP - I'm yet to decide.

I never liked WFP's Java + Eclipse platform. I believe it is slow and unpredictable.

Java makes it OS independent. Unless you have 64 bit Linux - then WFP *will not run*.

@scallions
Not sure. My main concern is that WFC might become too expensive separately, and that WFC might not be stable - so I'm considering other CAT tools (more expensive, but not too expensive).

Can MemoQ and Dejavu X create,

No.

read and write WFP's TMs and TXML files?

Yes.
For TXML, indirectly i.e. not out of the box.
E.g., for memoQ, see the Roberto Savelli's blog at http://blog.albatrossolutions.com/tent-cat-tools/translating-wordfast-txml-files-in-memoq
For DVX, a similar filter is available in the dejavu-l yahoogroups download archives.

The TM import is easy, both tools provide CSV import filter.

Cheers
GG

Short answer: No.

Long answer: No, but... you can run them through the pre-installed Boot Camp app or a virtual Windows machine.

Personally, I prefer running multiplatform TEnTs like the one you use.

And... don't forget the Mac forum on ProZ.com: http://www.proz.com/forum/apple_mac_operating_systems-68.html

cost of wf license Dec 13, 2010

I opened a separate topic but got no input
maybe someone here can help me
why must we renew the license
evidently we only "rent" the product and must relicense every year
ok - I am ok with this, however to relicense I believe having to pay the full cost of the program is a bit much

does this not distress anyone else?
part of the reason why I chose wf was the price factor
at this point perhaps I should have used other criteria to choose

Wasn't the licensing period 3 years?

I chose wordfast for the price, probably my fault for not reading the small print but I am not happy with this pay as you go policy
I should have invested in dejavu - one time license cost and free updates for life

in the end I would have spent much less
