a. Hello parents and students! I want to thank you for joining my class. I’m writing this newsletter to give you a clear picture of what students are learning in this class.
B. Overview
a. My mission as a tutor is to help students become fluent in English as quickly as possible. In my experience, this is best accomplished with:
i. A methodical study plan that focuses on high-frequency vocabulary, grammar, and functions.
ii. Frequent testing to track progress
iii. An emphasis on speaking and error correction
iv. Incorporation of authentic English content (TV shows, movies, news, music, magazines…etc.) as quickly as possible
b. Levels
i. I use the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to track student level. Below is a chart that shows it’s correlation with other common testing models
ii.
c. All Levels
i. In my experience, the most effective way to learn a language is using a methodology called Learn-Copy-Apply (LCA).
1. LEARN
a. The students process a video clip or audio sample of native speakers communicating by learning the composite vocabulary, grammar, and functions.
2. COPY
a. The student emulates the way the speakers communicate to each other, trying to copy their pronunciation, gestures, facial expressions…etc.
b. The student practices this until it is mastered and memorized.
3. APPLY
a. Real-world simulation
i. The student is given a new situation similar to the dialogue they’ve now mastered. They must apply the language they’ve learned by acting out the situation as though it were real.
d. A1-A2
i. For students who are at a B1 level or below, my objective is to teach them the most frequently occurring vocabulary, grammar, and functions to prepare them for classes using authentic English content as quickly as possible. I want the students to speak as much as possible, but at lower levels they haven’t developed the range to communicate themselves fluently, so I ‘scaffold’, teaching the necessary vocabulary and grammar needed to express themselves, and then I provide a lot of assistance until they’re able to speak fluently on their own. While students are speaking, I keep detailed records of their errors, and at the end of each class we correct these errors together. I load these errors to Quizlet (details below) and the students are expected to review their errors to ensure that they’ve been corrected. To track their progress, I verify that they’ve done the homework online, and I then quiz them to make sure that they’ve mastered the corrections. For long term progress tracking, I have a list of competencies that I test students on that correlate to each CEFR level. Every 3 months I test them on these competencies to determine how much they’ve progressed, and focus on fixing the areas they’re still struggling with.
e. B1 and up
i. Students who have progressed to a B1 level will experience accelerated progress in my program, as we switch gears to focus on authentic English content and intensive speaking and error correction. Generally, I use clips from TV shows and movies to teach authentic, natural language and pronunciation. As for A1-A2 students, while students are speaking, I keep detailed records of their errors, and at the end of each class we correct these errors together. I load these errors to Quizlet (details below) and the students are expected to review their errors to ensure that they’ve been corrected. To track their progress, I verify that they’ve done the homework online, and I then quiz them to make sure that they’ve mastered the corrections.

1. Vocabulary (sentence production)
a. Student plays a sentence production game with the teacher with the learnt vocabulary from the previous class. Teacher records errors for correction at the end of class (Sentence production is the 2nd step in vocabulary mastery. The game construct is both engaging and fun for the student and extremely effective. Typically the student will produce 40-50 original sentences using the target vocabulary in one 10 minute game).
2. Dialogue (memorization)
a. Student demonstrates memorization of the target dialogue from the previous class (Memorization of dialogues is an effective way to review covered language in a more interesting way. It gives the student a model they can keep in their mind and use in similar situations. It has the added benefit of being kept in its original context, making it easier to remember for the student).
iii. New Material (30 minutes)
1. LEARN
a. Vocabulary (retention)
i. Student learns new vocabulary through speed games, and demonstrates understanding by completing exercises (Retention is the 1st step in vocabulary mastery. The speed game construct enables the student to rapidly memorize 10-12 new words while having fun and remaining motivated to learn).
b. Dialogue (comprehension)
i. Student listens to a new dialogue and is asked questions about the dialogue to demonstrate understanding.
ii. Pronunciation practice
c. Grammar and Idioms
i. Teacher teaches the necessary grammar and idioms needed to fully grasp the dialogue.
ii. Student demonstrates mastery of the concepts through exercises and/or a game
2. COPY
a. Dialogue (memorization)
i. Teacher helps the student to internalize the dialogue. Student demonstrates memorization of the dialogue.
3. APPLY
a. Real-world simulation
i. Student is given a context similar to the context of the dialogue, but with relevant differences. The student has an unscripted roleplay with the teacher with this new context. The teacher records student errors for correction at the end of class.
iv. Error Correction (5 minutes)
1. Teacher goes over student errors with the student, prompting them to correct their own errors prior to offering assistance.
2. When the errors are all corrected, the teacher uploads them to the virtual classroom where they can be accessed and reviewed by the student in preparation for the next quiz
b. B1 and up
i. Quiz (5 minutes)
1. Student takes a 10-question quiz on errors from previous classes
ii. Review (15 minutes)
1. Vocabulary (sentence production)
a. Student plays a sentence production game with the teacher with the learnt vocabulary from the previous class. Teacher records errors for correction at the end of class.

iii. New Material (60 minutes-typically done over 2 classes)
1. LEARN
a. Vocabulary (retention)
i. Student learns new vocabulary through speed games, and demonstrates understanding by completing exercises

b. Dialogue (Gist)
i. Student watches the video once to get a basic idea of what’s happening.
c. Dialogue (Detail 1, Grammar and Idioms)
i. Student watches again, this time with an incomplete script with gaps-student must fill in the gaps for listening practice.
ii. Teacher asks the student comprehension check questions about difficult content within the script and teaches anything the student doesn’t fully understand.
d. Dialogue (Detail 2)
i. Student is asked a series of questions to verify that they’ve understood the video, and the teacher records errors for correction at the end of class.
2. COPY
a. Pronunciation practice
i. The student listens to and tries to emulate the speakers perfectly.
b. Dialogue (memorization)
i. Teacher helps the student to internalize the dialogue. Student demonstrates memorization of the dialogue in a scripted roleplay with the teacher.
3. APPLY
a. Activity
i. The student demonstrates mastery of key vocabulary, grammar, and functions through an activity-typically an unscripted roleplay or a discussion.

F. Rescheduling/Cancellation
a. One cancellation per four scheduled classes is permitted with at least 3 hours notice by text, email or phone (my contact information is at the top of the page). If the requested notice is not given or if more than one cancellation is required the class will be billed at the normal rate. Please understand that each class requires a considerable amount of preparation outside of class, and that this is my business that I rely on for income. I respectfully ask that you provide adequate notice if you need to cancel.
b. Rescheduling is permitted (provided the student is able to find a suitable available time slot in the instructor’s schedule), and will not count toward the allowance for cancellations. As with cancellations, please provide at least 3 hours notice.

H. NEW ELEARNING TOOLS!
a. As some of you already know, I’m in the process of building two elearning websites that I will be using in my classes. I’ll be building the sites over the next few months, and they’ll be ready for use in class shortly.
i. Diagnostic Grammar
1. Most language students have a similar experience-they start out with one teacher learning from one curriculum, and then they go to the next grade or change schools and start a new curriculum, and then repeat this process again and again. The end result is that students waste a lot of time re-learning what they already know and not spending enough time on the material that they do not. I’m building a course to address this problem-it will be a diagnostic English course that will determine what a student’s weaknesses and strengths are, and focus on improving weaknesses. I will use this tool principally with A1-A2 students.
ii. English through video
1. This is a course I’m building for B1+ students that will feature popular video clips. Students will be able to learn the vocabulary, grammar, and idioms from the video before we even start class, and it will help them to memorize the dialogue more effectively. This will make the learning process more efficient and we’ll be able to spend more time on speaking production.

1. 대부분의 언어를 배우는 학생들은 비슷한 경험이 있을 것입니다. 한 선생님에게 커리큘럼을 배우기 시작해서 다음 단계로 가거나 학원을 바꾸고 새로운 커리큘럼을 시작합니다. 그리고는 똑같은 과정을 계속해서 반복하죠. 결국 결과는 학생들이 이미 아는 것을 다시 배우느라 많은 시간을 허비하고 모르는 자료에 충분한 시간을 투자하지 못합니다. 저는 이런 문제를 바로잡기 위한 코스를 만들고 있습니다. 이것은 학생의 약점과 강점이 무엇인지 결정하고 약점 발전에 집중하는 영어 진단 코스입니다. 저는 A1-A2 학생들에게 원칙적으로 이 도구를 쓰려 합니다.
ii. 비디오를 통한 영어
1. 이것은 제가 B1+ 학생들을 위해 만들고 있는 코스인데 유명한 비디오 클립을 다룰 것입니다. 학생들은 수업을 시작도 하기 전에 이 비디오에서 단어, 문법과 숙어를 배울 수 있게 될 것이고 이것은 대화를 좀 더 효과적으로 암기할 수 있게 도울 것입니다. 이것은 배우는 과정을 더 효율적으로 만들고 우리는 말하기에 좀 더 많은 시간을 쓸 수 있을 것입니다.

Hello, my name is Kyungyeon LEE. I have a
major in Chemistry at Dongguk University, Korea. Fortunately, I had a great
opportunity to go to New Zealand for studying and traveling with working
holiday visa. Living in NZ for 2 years made me very fluent with conversation,
achieving IELTS score(7.5/9.5 Academic), a job with foreign people, and a
veterinary course for half a year as well as learning the culture and people in
depth. Back in Korea, I worked as an English teacher for 2 years and some
part-time jobs in cafes and restaurants. Those experiences allowed me to
understand how to teach and understand students.
With
teaching Grammar and Reading in a private school in Korea, it was a very
intense course with minimum 10 students in one class, taking care of 4 classes
a day with different levels and books. Explaining the concepts of the lessons
of grammar was followed by homework of exercises every day. Memorizing
vocabulary in advance and comprehending the reading lessons were effective to
improve students' abilities. Every 2 weeks, I made my own tests based on what
we learned and the consultation with parents was necessary. Not only just
conveying information to my students, I was also very fond of them and I
enjoyed building close relationships with all of them. The age was in the range
of elementary to high school.
In
conclusion, I am very confident that I can do this task with passion and skills
