I always comment on my translations to my family, be them language or business related. I just can't keep my mouth shut whenever I receive a denial.

My son is a lawyer, my daughters are a biotechnology technician and an architect (turned food entrepreneur) and they have been occasionally quite involved in my translations and extremely helpful!

Not in the translations themselves, but most definitely in the business.
I regularly draw on my brother's networks and let him set up the right contacts for me or even pre-negotiate on my behalf. My sister has at times helped me out on the administrative side. If I have expertise and connections at my fingertips through relatives, it would be silly not to utilise them. Of course the onus equally falls on me at times.

If our fields of interest were a little closer aligned, I wouldn't think twice about involving them in translation matters, but as it stands, they are all split between medicine/healthcare and IT, whereas I am drawn to financial and legal matters in an odd combination with agriculture, so really there is zero overlap. ▲ Collapse

I work better with fewer intrusions and distractions, which family involvement in the business side of things would create.
But the missus becomes 'involved' against my wishes when I've had a particularly bad month and we have to tighten our belts and cut back on the luxuries for a while.
Life, as usual, has its ups and downs.

No - and they do not expect me to. I am big enough to get on with it on my own. Besides, as someone else hinted, our skill sets are too different for the sharing of business information to be of benefit to anyone. My family only care that I am happy and healthy and vice versa.

My daughter creates and submits invoices for me. In addition, when I don't have the time to create complex tables, she will apply her next generation skills to set them up.

If asking them clarification on some term I don't totally grasp the meaning of and they might, then yes. I always ask people around me what they do for work, so that I can get back to them in case I have questions related to the field they work on. It's (part of) my network of experts.

... sometimes does easy translations for me as a way to earn extra money. I only give her jobs with little intellectual content (she's 15) and ALWAYS revise everything she does. We agreed that I'd give her half of what I earn on any project. I figure, she works for money, and she keeps her two languages (Catalan, Spanish) alive while we're living on the other side of the ocean!

I ask my partner for advice when something new happens, but anyway they are involved (wife and kids) since I am the main breadwinner.... so when I say "Silence i am working" or "Sorry guys, this weekend I have to work"... well I affect their routine...

I translate from Spanish to English and Gaby, my wife, translates from English to Spanish.
We don't have any kids yet, but once they show up I will amass my army of trilingual mini-translators and take over the world! Figuratively speaking...
