Sometimes, with no shade at all, and others, shaded or somewhat protected..

a cielo abierto significa sin sombra o abierto a los efectos del sol (o la lluvia). "Uncovered" me vale también, pero depende del tono que quieres emplear.

If you wish to include a broader term, \"exposed to the elements\" could serve, but I think in this context we are referring to the sun, and shade from the same.
