Dutch to English Medical Medical (general) heading in medical journal
At the end of a journal article, 'plaatsbepaling' is a standard section. It seems a bit like the 'What is already known on this topic and what this study adds' section at the end of some English articles, i.e. it places the article within its field in terms of relevance. Is there a short translation of 'plaatsbepaling'? Or is the correct translation those two sentences in English articles?

No, it's not a position paper. The journal uses at the end of quite short articles. Yes, it is a sort of a summary, but more what Barend suggests at 23.41 yesterday, which is kind of like the English phrase I originally found in the BMJ and included in the question. But as this is quite wordy compared to the Dutch, I wondered what else might do. However, I am fairly happy with 'context' anyway.

Summary I think I agree with Barend's first suggestion of 'summary'. Although, technically, this thing is a 'systematic review summary', 'review summary', etc. it won't really do to list the whole name in the text itself. I suppose it would also be a good idea to try to determine what texts like this as a whole are called in English. Is it a systematic review, a knowledge summary, etc.?

Summary of current knowledge.
Review of current knowledge.
Knowledge summary.

I find this hard to visualise - is it a part of the article, or some kind of summary for quick reference? Is it possible to show us what it says? And if it's the last part of the article, why not call it Conclusion?

Having seen the context (in the discussion entry), I think 'Context' would do nicely. I'll leave this answer up just in case it proves useful to someone at some point.

The bigger picture

I have read many English papers in my career, and they usually have a "Summary" [and/or] "Conclusion(s)". If "Plaatsbepaling" is the usually term for a concluding section in a Dutch paper, then "Summary and Conclusion" may be an adequate rendering.

"The Bigger Picture" was one of the headlines I encountered apart from the usual scheme, and might also fit for your purposes.
