This phrase comes up in a report on the sound absorption of screens used to divide up office space. Here’s a description of the screens as background:
De schermen bestaan uit een metalen frame waartegen aan beide zijden panelen worden aangebracht die aan de buitenzijde met stof bekleed zijn. De panelen bestaan uit spaanderplaat met gaten; de gehele spouw was gevuld met vlokkenschuim.
The sound absorption measurements were carried out in a reverberation room (nagalmkamer).
Meetresultaten
Op blad 7 is de totale absorptie per scherm in grafiek- en tabelvorm gegeven. Hierbij moet worden opgemerkt dat de absorptiewaarden bepaald volgens de nagalmmethode geen materiaalconstanten zijn die men in willekeurige gevallen zou kunnen gebruiken voor de berekeningen van nagalmtijden en de vergelijking van materialen. De absorptiewaarden volgens deze methode verkregen zijn namelijk alleen geldig voor **“statistisch” invallend geluid** zoals optreedt in het geval van een “diffuus” geluidveld. Bovendien is de absorptie van de configuratie afhankelijk van de wijze van bevestigen van het materiaal.
Eurodicautom does have “statistisch geluidniveau” (exceedance value), but I’m not sure whether that’s relevant here. Needless to say, can’t find any support for “statistical incident sound/noise”. Thanks for any enlightenment.

I essentially agree with Jack\'s comment; IMO it\'s a question of how far you want to go in filling in the blanks in the source text (which is telegraphic at best). From the cited source: \'an ideal diffuse sound field is determined by the definition that from all space directions the sound incidence at the measuring place is equally strong and equally distributed. However, the average value over time of the sound intensity vector is zero\'. From a strictly physical perspective, any sort of impinging sound can have a statistically distributed direction of incidence; what\'s important for a diffuse field is the nature of the distribution.
A perhaps safer translation in the case at hand would be \'random direction of incidence\'.
