Dutch term

messen

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Plastering
"De FS in een dunne gelijkmatige laag van maximaal 3 - 5 mm dik opbrengen, vlak afreien en/of messen."

"afreien" = strickle off.
So "messen" might be to cut off, but that does not seem to fit with plastering.

Any ideas?
References?
TIA

Because "afmessen" is not to be found in any of my smart helpers, including van Odenhoven, Bouwkunde.

Dear Siobhan, that's good. Then you should maybe put "afmessen" in brackets behind the requested term and provide your answer for points.
Hello Alexander, I ran a search on google and found the text that I think you are working on. You should read it as 'afreien en/of afmessen'. Afmessen appears earlier on in the text, which I presume you have already translated.

to level or skim

Further to my comments above, from the reference below: 'afmessen' is a deprecated term for 'messen' which in turn is a deprecated term for 'egaliseren", which means to level or skim. As far as I can make out from 'googling,skim appears to be the appropriate term with regard to plastering. Afreien - met een reit nivelleren.... nivelleren also means to level.

Oops, type: 'reit' should read 'rei'.

agree Fred Visagie : skim is the word. Action done with a steel trowel as opposed to wooden trowel for afreien
