Arabic term

وسقتني قهرا حتى الثمالة

Arabic to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Hi everyone,

The context here is a young girl remembering a man who she suspects killed her father. I'm not sure what this phrase means here.

،
وضع كفه على كتف أبي يواسيه ، تلك الكف نفسها سفكت دمه، وسقتني قهرا حتى الثمالة ، هل أخطأ والدي عندما وثق به؟

Thank you!

Have me hell until I could bear/stand no more

I think it has nothing to do with alcohol, that’s only a degree of getting so abused.

and extremely abused me

Literal translation: his hands subjugated me until I felt drunk.
It's extremely hard to come up with a faithful translation because Arabic is very vivid in describing scenes.

It's a personalisation (I guess) because a man abused her, and she placed emphasise on his hands. It's obvious he used to abuse her harshly, and his physical abuse was terrible
She used to feel (as if she were drunk) when he abused her.

Thank you for this thoughtful explanation!

and drove me to drinking until oblivion/ stupor

I would think that سقتني here means 'gave me to drink'
hence my translation.
As for ثمالة, I didn't want to say 'drunkenness' because it would be too repetitive with the verb 'drink'

Also possible: and forced me to drink until oblivion/ stupor

Note: i meant ‘gave me to drink’ in a metaphoric way, meaning that the hand that likely killed her father is the hand which (metaphorically) gave her to drink, i.e. pushed her into the habit of drinking
