English term

yellow jacket

Non-PRO English to Spanish Science Zoology
How does one say "yellow jacket" in Spanish? Yellow jackets are carnivorous wasps with black and yellow stripes. Many Americans call the "bees" but actually they are not bees. I don't no if Spanish speakers make a similar mistake calling the "abejas". Nevertheless, any help with a correct Spanish translation is appreciated. Even if I don't VOTE for your answer your answer is still appreciated.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Apr 22, 2004:
yellow jacket First of all, I wish to apologize for a couple of typos I made in my English question - "no" should be "know" in this case.
This one is a little hard to vote on because all four of you seem to be right on a certain level of analysis. I chose Alvaro's explanation because avispa amarilla seems to enjoy wide currancy in Latin America. However, his research pretty much verifies that vespula, avispa, amarilla chaqueta and perhaps vespula malculifrons are valid in some countries and in certain contexts too. It sure looks like vespula is more common to Mexico and California, avispa to Spain. I wish to thank Pepis, Alvaro, Sven and Salvador all for your responses. There was not much peer review on this one. That's too bad because the more peer review, the easier it is to come to an accurate and fair decision in the voting. Thanks again for your help!

Sincerely,
Brian Costello

avispa amarilla

hi brian,

i spent quite some time browsing for this one. i think an adequate and not too literal translation could be "avispa amarilla", based on this excerpt from a web page called "entomología forense" in argentina:

Familia Vespidae
Vespula germanica (L., 1758)

although it seems that at least 4 subspecies of wasp are called yellow jackets, after running a quick search on google, it would seem this name is also used in other latinamerican nations:

Vespula maculifrons

Don't think there is a specific common name in Spanish.
"Vespula" is not specific enough.
Suggest you use the Latin "Vespula maculifrons".

avispa (chaqueta amarilla)

I think is a type of avispa (wasp) vespula germánica. In many web pages they translate the term as avispa chaqueta amarilla although the common term in Spain is "avispa". Maybe technically is incorrect since they are a specific type of avispa, but that's the way we refer to them.

Peer comment(s):

agree MJ Barber : I think Spanish people would just call it 'avispa'. If you need the technical term then go for the vespula germánica, but otherwise, it would just be avispa

yes... definitely we would say "avispa". Thx MJ :)
agree María Teresa Taylor Oliver : "Avispa" and that's it. I've never heard of "avispa+someting else" (commonly, I mean).

Neither have I :) Nos quedamos con avispa a secas!
