Two riggers were lifting a deck winch from its location on the vessel’s port side to the gas quad deck. The cranes on that side weren’t available so they were using the one on the starboard side. Its main hook was directly over the deck winch with a stinger hanging from it to connect the safety hook to the master link on the winch’s lift rigging.
The sea was quite rough and, as the men were preparing to attach the stinger hook to the master link, the movement of the vessel caused it to swing.
The safety hook swung through a gap between two protective guards that were fitted to the winch.
One of the riggers saw this happening and tried to free the hook by pushing it with his right hand. He was wearing gloves but his little finger was briefly trapped between the hook and the frame. It was badly crushed and needed immediate attention from the medic.
