Italian term

nosologico

Italian to English Medical Medical: Health Care hospital records
A patient's treatment and discharge report has the term

"Nr. Nosologico"

Several possible translations, which is most likely (the particular form is the surgical report).

Discussion

Joseph Tein Jul 4, 2015:
disease classification It can also be used to mean this ... hence the confusion.

In some contexts, "nosologico" refers to a disease:

"Il vigente codice nosologico 206 ricomprende in sé una serie di patologie "renali "

Joseph Tein Jul 1, 2015:
Yet again, I'm searching for the meaning of this term and I haven't found a satisfying translation. Coming back to this question posted almost 3 years ago, I don't believe that "nosographic" offers anything useful here (it means "relating to the systematic description of diseases.)" I think it's some sort of patient identifier, as suggested by this text I found today:

Joseph Tein Sep 12, 2012:
I've asked it before ... and struggled with it several times.

My best/latest opinion is that it is a patient identifier, not about any disease classification or diagnosis.

At this point, I would just say "patient number." (Not "medical record number", which would be "Nr. di cartella")

Clicking the link doesn't work but for some reason copying and pasting into a fresh window or tab does work - thanks anyway, seems to be a comprehensive discussion of the same question.
Laurence Fogarty Sep 11, 2012:
Mmm..ProZ doesn't let me copy in the full URL details for some reason. Hopefully you can get to it now in any case : http://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/medical_general...
Laurence Fogarty Sep 11, 2012:
and add this bit : medical_general/3879253-nosologico.html
Laurence Fogarty Sep 11, 2012:
adding those dots seems to be the issue...my fault...just remove those last three after the word 'general' in the link.
achisholm (asker) Sep 11, 2012:
link appears to be broken can't see page - error message
Laurence Fogarty Sep 11, 2012:
Hi Alexander, have a look at this for reference - http://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/medical_general... suggests that your source is referring to the number of the doc.

disease classification

"Nosology" is the classification of diseases. Given the limited context you provide, I would suggest "diagnostic code."

The development of SNIPS had three stages: (1) defining categories of disorders from a specialist surgical perspective; (2) choosing a primary care terminology and classifying it using the surgical categories; and (3) employing a large national dataset of general practice activity to improve the precision of the classification by restricting the nosology to disorders that are consistently referred to surgeons.

Acute transverse myelitis (ATM) is a focal inflammatory disorder of the spinal cord resulting in motor, sensory and autonomic dysfunction. We propose a set of uniform diagnostic criteria and nosology for ATM to avoid the confusion that inevitably results when investigators employ differing criteria.

Hence we developed the Surgical Nosology In Primary-care Settings (SNIPS). We have used the classification system in analysis of a national dataset of general practice activity to describe referrals to surgeons [9] and to study the influence of specialist proximity on referral rates [10].

admission number

This is a little late for this particular question, but I'm adding my answer here to set the record straight and provide a useful translation for colleagues who search this term in the future.

Here is what a doctor friend in Italy shared with me:

Nosology is the description of diseases, but in the administrative language the "numero nosologico" identifies a hospital record number.

" ... all’atto dell’accettazione viene generato un numero identificativo del ricovero (numero nosologico),... "

Il nosologico è il numero della SDO (scheda di dimissione ospedaliera) e del ricovero; viene assegnato automaticamente dal programma. Nel’attuale configurazione del programma ADT nosologico = numero della SDO = numero del ricovero.
