local varieties of squash

local varieties of hard shell squash

when dealing with agricultural products, I usually translate 'criollo' as 'local' or 'local variety', as in the local fruits and vegetables of the region.

Hard shell squash meat may also be cut into pieces and added to soups, stews, and casseroles.

Yes, as Henry mentions, zapallo can be squash, pumpkin and even calabash. Depends on the target country.

agree Henry Hinds : Maybe a pumpkin, but your answer is a safe one.

disagree Laura Molinari : please be careful of your spelling. This is 'zapallo' not 'zapato'

gourd

I think this is the word you are looking for. Are they the colorfully striated ones so often seen, dried and shellacked, as table decorations at this time of the year? I have some on my table right now.

autumn squash or winter squash

agree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : Squash: what a world. In French, it's curcubitacés generically. So funny
