Russian term

склонность к рассуждательству

Russian to English Medical Medical (general)
На фоне терапии сохранилась подозрительность к окружающим и склонность к рассуждательству.

Спасибо!

Discussion

M.D. (X) (asker) Jun 5, 2008:
Скорее всего в психиатрии это склонность к резонерству, философствованию. Склонность к спорам не относится к симптомам шизофрении.

tendency to engage in argumentation

...suspicious attitude and tendency to engage in argumentation...

I suppose it might have been "intricate argumentation" or something like that, but it would probably be going overboard to add a qualifier.

I'm just trying to think if the medical people use a technical term for this compulsive argumentation, or compulsive hyper-ratiocination (!), or whatever it might be. But I'm not aware of one. I mean what Olga said in her comment (which I saw after posting.)

Hey, "hyperratiocination" is a word! But, I found it in a description of Conan Doyle literary career, not psychiatry (though there may be some overlap): "The novel marks the beginning of the end of his hyperratiocination phase that had begun with the Sherlock Holmes tales..."

Several psychology texts use "compulsive internal dialogue," but I don't know how "internal" the behavior your text describes is. "...tendency to engage in compulsive internal dialogue" sounds good, but may be too far afield.
Peer comment(s):

agree Olga Cartlidge : also "rambling" i.e. ''tendency to engage in rambling internal dialogue" - such patients tend to ramble and mutter to themselves. ("outbursts of rambling... match the diagnostic" http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:ZYcsBEhSupQJ:www.nytime...

Right, I agree on ditching "compulsive." Adding meaning that's not in the original is what I meant by "too far afield." Thanks, Olga.
agree Tatiana N. (X) : which is in itself not a medical diagnosis :)

True. But, we haven't been told if this is a formal medical write-up, or something relatively casual. Thanks.

tendency to argue

I'm semi-guessing as to what рассуждать would mean in this context, but arguing seems the more probably option.

I don't know about that, it's listed as a known symptom in at least paranoid schizophrenia.

There are plenty of other links.

Signs/Symptoms

Schizophrenia usually develops gradually, although onset can be sudden. Friends and family often notice the first changes before the victim does. Among the signs are:

* Confusion
* Inability to make decisions
* Hallucinations
* Changes in eating or sleeping habits, energy level, or weight
* Delusions
* Nervousness
* Strange statements or behavior
* Withdrawal from friends, work, or school
* Neglect of personal hygiene
* Anger
* Indifference to the opinions of others
* A tendency to argue
* A conviction that you are better than others, or that people are out to get you

Peer comment(s):

neutral Olga Cartlidge : Such patients tend to engage in animated discussions with themselves (e.g. putting a question to themselves, reflecting on the possible answers and then saying "I cannot answer that question....) so "argue" may not be the exact term.

If that's the meaning of рассуждать in this context, then you are right. To me the meaning seemed a bit different. Thank you for your comment.

agree Alexandra Goldburt : In view of Lubuv's note about psychiatry/schisofrenia, verbosity seems to be more appropriate than arguing.
